44% of current & future U.S. smartphone owners considering Windows Phone 7

Windows Phone 7

A new report from market research company NPD claims that 44% of current and future U.S. smartphone owners are considering Windows Phone 7 handsets.

NPD’s report singles out Windows Phone 7 as a future platform bet for consumers. “Android is also experiencing continued competition from Apple’s popular iPhone, as well as some nascent competition from Windows Phone ,” said Linda Barrabee, research director for Connected Intelligence. “Android’s continued market dominance is in no way guaranteed,” added Barrabee.

NPD warned that there are a number of hurdles for Microsoft’s mobile operating system. “45 percent of consumers are still not aware of Windows Phone 7,” says NPD. The market research company also revealed that of the 50% of consumers who plan to purchase a smartphone in the next six months and aren’t interested in Windows Phone 7, the most popular reason is down to lack of awareness. 46% felt they didn’t know enough about Windows Phone. “Windows Phone 7 has a way to go before consumers really understand what it is,” Barrabee said. “But with the right marketing mojo, apps portfolio, and feature-rich hardware, Microsoft could certainly improve its standing and chip away at Android’s dominant market position.” NPD also note that “Windows Phone 7 is showing potential,” and that the Google/Motorola deal could drive some OEMs to widen their OS choices going forward which could impact long term Android success.

Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace recently passed 30,000 applications. Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 Marketplace has taken nearly 10 months to reach 30,000 apps since launch. Apple’s iPhone App Store took just over 8 months and Google’s Android store took 17 months to reach the same amount. Microsoft’s developer momentum is treading well as it approaches a year of Windows Phone 7 in the market. The software giant is preparing to help launch the first Nokia Windows Phone device at Nokia World next month. A number of key Microsoft executives, including Joe Belfiore, who oversees Windows Phone Program Management, will be making the trip to London next month for Nokia World on October 26. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop is expected to unveil the company’s first Windows Phone offering alongside a number of Microsoft speakers.

Nokia’s first Windows Phone, codenamed “Sea Ray” was leaked to the internet recently after Elop demonstrated the device at a company meeting. The device is expected to be made available by Christmas. The design of the device appears to be identical to the recently announced Nokia N9. The device is “super confidential” at this stage and features gorilla glass, pillow shaped backing and a carl ziess 8MP camera. The secret nature of the device hasn’t stopped it leaking however. A new video emerged recently of ‘Sea Ray’ booting up into Windows Phone 7.5. The video demo provides a good hands on for the new device, expected to be named the Nokia 703.

Hey, nothing but good things here on out!

Yeah I think Mango will get some good buzz in the mainstream media once it launches. It’s so good and unique, the media cannot continue to ignore it IMO. Once WP gets rolling, watch out… I honestly don’t see many unbiased and informed mainstream consumers choosing Android over Mango.

    • Joe_HTH

I am just concern that any good buzz mango gets will be crushed my Apple iPhone5 :(

    • Chris

It will be what Microsoft makes out of it. But they are a bit late to the game in terms of features,

    • Guest

… and Android is late, actually not there yet, in performance…

    • Guest

And it’s got a big legal problem, and Oracle is going to win the pending case, and other Android OEMs are busy hedging their bets following Google’s MMI buy, and…

    • Anonymous

      Just like the iPhone was.

Something inside of me tells me this is an inaccurate report/number.

      the truth always hurts.

    • Guest

Well, 20% of Americans apparently believe Obama is a Muslim. So that’s polls for you.

    • Chris

and 95% believe Sarah Pailin is evil.

    • Guest

      Evil? Put down the bong.

    • Anonymous

I think they believe she is mentally handicapped, not evil.

I just like to say, before it happens, That I liked WP7 and Metro before it was cool!

    • Lord Jem

      LOL me 2

That should be their tag line for a viral video marketing campaign!

    • Henrik

All of us who purchased a 1st gen WP7 phone will share your coolness ;-)

I just like to say, before it happens, that I liked WP7 before it gets canned.

Sorry to burst your hopes and dreams, but Windows Phone is not going anywhere.  MS is in it for the long haul.

    • Joe_HTH

Your right, MS will uses all of it resources and like XBOX will put hugh amount of money into making the WP7 get a respectable market share.   It may not ever be profitable but they will keep us in the game.

    • Chris

Question is will they make it work?

    • Anonymous

      yes

    • Anonymous

it will get canned like the xbox…oh wait.

    • Anonymous

right because Microsoft ecosystem is horrible… you know playing multiplayer games against Windows 8 Xbox and windows phone. being able to port really easily (like thet showed) in a simple code change from Windows 8 apps to Windows phone. also using the same UI tan Windows 8 and xbox… with skydrive, hotmail… well Windows live, skype, office, Xbox live…. ehmm Windows the most used OS in the world…

so yeah, i understand you. how a phone will survive with this ecosystem :… i guess next week we wont see more Windows phones selling out there

Just like Xbo…. oh nm someone beat me to it. ;)

Google is more likely to bring something out of beta than MS is to can Windows Phone.

Don’t care. Americans love Pepsi. How the hell can a country that likes Pepsi now whats good or not?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mitch-Foster/100000527225418 Mitch Foster

It’s all about that RC Cola!

    • Chris

That disgusting peace of shit?  Its ok if you like flat tasting soda and limited avalblity.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1198150213 Joe Murray

That is too broad of a statement.  Whether or not an American likes Pepsi or Coke better is all pretty much dependent upon geographic location.  Pepsi is the most popular in the North East and somewhat on the Left Coast.  We Coke drinkers have everywhere else ;)

    • Chris

One word: Hollywood.  Why do more movies feature coke in it?

    • Guest

      Paid placements.

    • http://twitter.com/laserfloyd Lewis McCrary

I grew up (and still live) near Atlanta, GA so Coke is it! (See what I did there?) :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Pedro-Roque/100000194503830 Pedro Roque

      Just kidding!!!
After a week in Anaheim, surronded by Pepsi vending machines and no Coke in sight, I got pissed! And don’t get me started on the coffe!!! Who the hell drinks coffe out ou a giant plastic cup??

    • Chris

      I’m a ice coffee drinker

    • Junkie

Me if I’m desperate enough and it’s been too long since my last caffeine hit.

    • Chris

I perfer coke. Too be honest america perfers coke, Its an american icon. Why is it in more movie and TV shows? Kids just like pepsi because its a bit sweeter.

    • Anonymous

iMacs are in more movies and tv shows and they are not nearly as popular as Windows PCs.
      They pay for those placements.

    • Chris

That has nothing to do with anything I’ve said.

  • Anonymous

how would you fix WP7 (and MSFT as a whole):

fire all microsoft marketing from the VPs to the last manager. Maybe in the next round of Job cuts, marketing will go.

    • Guest

There’s a post all on its own, if it’s even possible anymore. And I don’t think it’s just about marketing. The marketing department isn’t even in charge of most marketing, which is part of the problem. Also, the long time marketing VP, Mitch Matthews, who was useless, got to retire less than a year ago. Not that the new person has shown any more aptitude.

  • Chris

More and more are choosing android rather then WP7.

    • Guest

Troll. Static from independent non-funded by Google study?

    • Guest

      *statistic

And more and more and being disappointed and now saying they should get a WP7 or iPhone next.  I post this as one of many such people in my family, friends, and co-workers that are unhappy with the poor performance and the bugs of Android.

  • http://twitter.com/Translatethis27 Translatethis27

    Wp7 the little joke.

  • Anonymous

Somewhere in that 44%, is my share of percentage.

My interest in WPM increases day by day, as Nokia prepares to launch it smartphones…

CONSIDERING, is the key word here.

Everyone is CONSIDERING WP7 but no one is buying it.
