Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer took to the stage at the Web 2.0 Summit on Wednesday and revealed Nokia plans to show off its Windows Phone devices next week.

Ballmer discussed Windows Phone briefly during his talk at the Web 2.0 Summit on Wednesday and touched on Nokia. He explained he was looking forward to Nokia showing off a “bunch of new devices next week,” indicating that the Finnish handset maker may have multiple devices to show. Ballmer revealed Nokia “will have a chance at their Nokia World show next week to show a bunch of new devices running Windows Phone,” before adding “it should be pretty good.”

Nokia appears to be preparing at least two Windows Phone devices. A number of different codenames and specification lists ha mocksve emerged over the past few weeks, none of them yet confirmed. Nokia is expected to unveil its first Windows Phone powered device at its Nokia World 2011 conference in London later this month. A number of Microsoft employees will also be speaking at Nokia World to detail the latest improvements with Windows Phone 7.5 and presumably some of Nokia’s software improvements. Nokia is believed to be preparing its “Sea Ray” device for the first official public unveiling, alongside another device codenamed the “Ace” or “Sabre”.

Ballmer refused to be drawn into questions on Microsoft’s prospects of building their own Windows Phone. “Our business has been focussed on enabling hardware innovation. We’re focussed on enabling hardware innovation broadly through our industry,” he said. Ballmer also briefly discussed Android and claimed you need to be a computer scientist to use an Android device. “It is very hard to be excited, for me, about the Android phones.”

Oh boy the gloves are off now!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NZRPL7DK7DFQQO44J5TM4PQLGU Harvey

I know that’s right.  7 minutes to go for the Android 4 and this comes out!  Oh boy.  Gonna be good :)

    • http://twitter.com/janespoon1 janespoon

He sounds very jealous of Android. LOL

    • Anonymous

That half billion dollars MS is bringing in from Android must make him cry at night. /s

    • Anonymous

jealous yes. fearful no. android remains a mess that is one distruption away from being the next myspace.

    • Guest

LOL the only way MS can make money in Mobile is to let someone else do it!!!!!!!!!

    • Guest

Correct. Ballmer has no gloves and no punch. He got KO’d by Apple and Google who are boxing for the title.

    • Anonymous

No no no. Apple and Google got some sucker punches in because, not only did he have gloves on, but also both his legs were buried in the deep antitrust bullshit.  I think you gonna see the real MS pretty soon.

    • Guest

I’ve been hearing people, including Ballmer, promising MS’s recovery every year for a decade. Guess what, it hasn’t come so far and it’s looking less likely with each passing year.

    • http://twitter.com/based_graham Graham R

Ballmer is not a fighter but more of a trainer his fighters are his services Zune Pass, Skype, Xbox Live, Bing, Tellme which he is currently training right now to be champions. He aint serving the punches his services will be. No other company has a more complete ecosystem than Microsoft right now. Once everything is marketed and is working together Apple and Google will start having to play catchup. Right now MS like a 3rd place in a F1 race when it comes to cellphones. Passing competitors at the right opportunity and time

    • http://www.twitter.com/wixostrix WixosTrix

Lol, maybe “the real MS” isn’t the best way to describe what we want to see.  Remember, despite all the great things they’ve been doing recently, “the real MS” is cut-throat with extortionist, anti-competitive practices.  I’d say (and hope), the new Microsoft (even if it may be just slightly improved)

    • Smart Guest

      Keep dreaming!

    • http://www.rwalrond.com RWalrond

From the looks of the new Android, I would say Google came out swinging with their own version of WP7.

  • Chris

Nokia is so 1999. People want choice balmer. Get that though your thick head.

    • Anonymous

Yes, because multiple OEMs building Windows Phones is giving everyone only one choice if they like Microsoft products and want a phone that plays nicely with them.

    • Anonymous

We have choice.  Have you seen the huge list of OEM’s making Windows Phones?

A numbskull telling somebody they have a thick head.  That’s rich.

    • Chris

All I’ve seen is Nokia very few HTC model. But hey. I guess you are a child or a forigner. Calling people names. That’s rich.

    • Guest

Says the non “forigner” who can’t even spell.

    • Anonymous

ZTE, Fujitzu, Acer, LG, HTC, Samsung, Nokia, Huawei………I’ll make sure it gets through Ballmers ‘thick head’.

    • Anonymous

Looking at the no. of OEMs there should be at least 15 or more different handsets with at least 3 handsets from each OEMs, so far HTC and Samsung are the only ones pushing those numbers. Others either are limited to particular market like either Europe or US. There isn’t much option really. The reason should be lack of global availability of the handsets. In US, the customers really don’t have much option compared to android. If you go to the verizon sotre, out of 100, 99 would be android, and its even hard to find the left 1 WP7 that is quitely placed in some corner of the store where the people don’t even to go. So, I really wish those all OEMs to provide us more options in terms of handset numbers not in the OEM no.

    • Anonymous

@Me_A_Stranger:disqus I don’t agree that there should be a flood of choices. More choices aren’t necessarily better choices. I have lost track of what the difference is between Android phones. I have lost track of what the difference is between the various Galaxy models that come from the same manufacturer.

I am glad there is only 1 Focus from Samsung. Clutter doesn’t mean better.

In fact I hope Microsoft continues to make OEMs put emphasis on quality not quantity.

    • OMG55

I get your point, but if verizon and others choose not to put them where they can be seen, what can MS do? Produce their own device and piss all manufacturers off. It’s easier said than done.

    • Anonymous

How does Nokia releasing Windows Phones do anything other than increase options?

    • http://twitter.com/janespoon1 janespoon

You’re right, I want to be able to choose

    • Anonymous

Tell that to Apple. You get one phone per year and it seems they are doing pretty well. MS at least has different OEMs providing hardware and choices. Your argument is not sound.

    • Anonymous

According to your logic Apple is so 1984! So Nokia is cutting edge in comparison…

    • Chris

guess you weren’t around in the 90s.

    • Anonymous

I was! Microsoft practically dominated that decade… Next.

    • Anonymous

apple is older than nokia…soooo your argument makes no sense.

    • Chris

Apple didn’t make phones in 1999.

    • OMG55

If allowing pretty much all manufactures the ability to put out a device is not choice, I don’t know what is. Oh, I forget having the same device in black & white is choice…….

  • Ep121

Hope, they will understand what people want to see “Cool devices” with 12 megapixel camera, big screen. 32 gb/64 gb, etc etc

    • OMG55

Does anyone currently have a 12MP camera? Not that I’ve seen and everything is pretty much being moved to a accessed via the cloud so onboard memory will become insignificant. Even Apple is taking a page out of MS’s book…..Skydrive – iCloud. They even came out publicly and stated that cell phones will be less dependent on memory.

So excited for Nokia World I can hardly stand it.

  • http://twitter.com/janespoon1 janespoon

It becomes quite difficult for Nokia, unless the specifications are better than those that are standard in wp7

    • Guest

Welcome new troll. Or should I say old troll with new alias?

    • Anonymous

Thank you. Trolls you gotta loathe them.

    • MSfan

Seems like a legitimate point that only tendentious tweet would disagree.

    • Anonymous

Which is what Microsoft is challenging OEMs to do. Compete on hardware specs and apps not on branding the OS.

      Nothing wrong with that.

    • http://twitter.com/Shadow_024 Shadow 024

There’s not a lot of processors that can be used though, so hardware specs equates to form factor and radios. Can’t increase resolution, can’t add better processors (single core or otherwise), can’t do 1080p recording… haven’t seen any HDMI style outputs, if that’s even possible too.  Sure, I would love this stuff, but OEMs can’t check off the amazing hardware specs box without them.

  • Emi Cyberschreiber

    I want nokiaaaaa!

Ballmer has now mocked iPod, iPhone, iPad, iTunes, Google search, Android, Chrome, Firefox, Salesforce, VMware. Dropbox, etc. And has been wrong every time.

    • http://twitter.com/efjay01 Ef Jay

He’s going to get it right sometime, could be now. :)

    • Tom

Salesforce is making negligible profits, and the company has guided for a GAAP loss next year.  When that stock bubble finally pops, it’s going to make Netflix look like a soft landing.

    • http://www.twitter.com/wixostrix WixosTrix

I interned at Salesforce for six months, I loved it but you could tell there was a very anti-Microsoft feel to the enviornment despite having to use Windows and Office.  They mostly use Google Docs, but Office is always there to fall back on, you know, when you wanted to get real work done.

Anyway, they have extraordinarily smart people working there but I pretty much lost interest in them as a company so I have no real idea how they are doing.  Do you think they aren’t in a good position?

    • Guest

      I love an optimist!

    • deathmore34

Looks like Android is going to be a major success now.

I just had to say that, I use an Omnia 7 and I love WP7, I just love that meme.

    • phil jay

They are all to be mocked if you ask me…

    • Tuxplorer

Ballmer has mocked LinSux, OS X, PS3 etc. And he has been right EVERY SINGLE TIME. Windows has 92% market share. LinSux has less than 1%. LOL. ROFLMAO!

    • AlienSix

92% share in a stagnant market… So after you get off the floor and pick-up you fallen arse, ask yourself what is MS share in growing markets like Mobile and Tablets?

    • Anonymous

a stagnant market that produces billions each quarter and will never go away. yeah. poor microsoft.

    • Anonymous

“92% share in a stagnant market” LOL! I bet your favorite tech company would kill for that share in a stagnant market.

Growing markets are exactly that, GROWING. It could windup being anybody’s game in such a fairly young market.

Apple mocks MS, MS mocks Google, Google mocks Apple ….

they all mock each other, AND they’re all right and wrong most times…

    • AlienSix

“AND they’re all right and wrong most times”

Just sit and think for while about how ignorant of a statement you just made… Ballmer is that you posting with a alias?

    • Anonymous

relax. CEOs must trash the compeition. it is their job.

    • Anonymous

Looks like someone’s upset that ballmer is right…

    • Anonymous

it is his job. if he ever were to say anything positive about his competition, he wouldn’t be a good ceo. it is basic business management 101.

  • http://twitter.com/based_graham Graham R

Windows phones do not need the power they dont need to be super complex its all about simplicity, reliability and the services it provides. As long as it remains under that template people will soon understand how great WP devices are. MS really needs to push Zune Pass which I think is great makes it very easy to download music on the go. Xbox Live add more addicting flash games no need to get crazy graphical titles like Infinity blade as long as gamers can kill some time, earn some achievements and play turn based with others and maybe some interaction with the 360 were good! MS also needs to get Skype built into the phone so for example if I have Skype credit on my Live account and if I want to call Jane I can either call her via phone or Skype. As long as WP makes it easy for the user to do his/her end-to-end tasks without a big strain on battery and OS crashes the phone is going to be great! Thats what I think sets WP apart from Android and IOS is the services it provides right out of the box and its only going to get better.

MS better give me a 4G device (with hotspot enable) and 4.5″+ screen, otherwise i have to go with nexus prime or galaxy note….waited for long time to upgrade from 3gs, no way going to buy small screen and 3G device, both are must…

    • http://twitter.com/based_graham Graham R

better luck going with android MS stated that they are not going with any 4G, LTE and dual core devices with WP7 maybe WP8 next year

    • http://twitter.com/TechyMexican Mario

They will support HSPA+ though! no need for dual core for the time being. I always said that LTE wasn’t necessary yet since i just made the phone thicker and have horrible battery life but the DROID RAZR shows that it possible to have an LTE device with good battery life and extremely thin body.

    • http://twitter.com/based_graham Graham R

Have they stressed tested it? I am sure it does great with limited functionality but what happens when the users go ape crazy and start playing crazy games and running multiple applications thats when the battery life can really take a hit.

    • Anonymous

I am windows fan runnning windows 8 on W500, Had lot of expectation with HTC Titan with Mango, though Radar has 4G it doesn’t have 4.5″+ screen, question is why HTC cant provide 4G with Titan, its huge, also having no SD card and 800*480 is another reason, and there is a slight play when attach cover….seems my ideal MS device is not yet on horizon, can’t live without 4G and big screen thus its a hard call but will have to take it….Galaxy note is perfect because of 1200 * 720 as it allows me to do VPN to my office network and do RDP to my office machine to do my work….and no need to carry laptop or tablet when i am hiking or travelling…. I know windows Mango will rock, but it needs best hardware to support it….having dual core doesn’t make any diff as i lknow single core WP7 is as good as android…its a commitment for next 2 years thus just cant afford to stick with 3g for next 2 years:)

  • Anonymous

Well, Nokia may show off a bunch of new devices, but how many is a bunch?  And will they all be Windows Phone, as there may be some Symbian devices and/or successors to the N8 in the pipeline?

With that said, be cautiously optimistic, folks; lot of disappointed Ice Cream Sandwichers out there….

  • http://twitter.com/based_graham Graham R

specifications are for kids being in I.T. for almost 4 years now I dont have time to mess with customization and system crashes I just want something that works, simple and reliable oh how times have changed. Except for gaming rigs ;)

  • Jon Keebler

Nokia needs to make a STFU phone to Android and iPhone…. If it sells or not, they need to make something that stands out as the BEST!!! Microsoft is in a fight with Apple and Google in the Phone industry and they are jabbing…. i hope Nokia is their “Over the Top Right Hook”

  • Anonymous

In all fairness, you don’t need to be a computer scientist either to use Android. If you want to root your phone and do things the OEM and the carrier did not intend for you to do, then the level of knowledge required to do that on any device goes up.

Steve needs to just deflect those and spin the response to paint his own brand in a good positive light without bashing the competition. That’s what Gates does so well.

Maybe he should hire a coach or something…

  • Anonymous

The question is whether Nokia’s hardware will catch people’s attention.  All the leaks thus far lead me towards a likely not….but, I hope I get surprised.

Microsoft needs to go to the drawing board with Nokia and create a flagship wp7 phone….

    • OMG55

If I remember correclty, MS & Nokia came out and said, “There will be different variation of WP7 phone base on economic status”…..Poor…..Middle Class…..Rich…..Filthy Rich

  • http://twitter.com/Franklin808 Keith Franklin

One of the (and a bunch isnt 2) Nokia phones has to be a spec leader, even if they dont expect to sell many.  High end Camera, 64GB of memory, etc.

Bald Boob Ballmer has put on weight (and FUD) again.

  • Anonymous

Im thinking by next year, everything will be smoothed out and in better shape, Microsoft is doing a pretty good job and is about to prove that they have been hiding a beast that will destroy the others

  • http://www.TheGuruReview.net TGR

MS and Nokia need to put up or shut for next week.  Otherwise they are toast.

    Oh Ballmer
