Bing launches “we’re in” location planning app for Windows Phone

Microsoft announced the availability of a new location based Windows Phone app on Thursday.

The application, named “we’re in” and built by the Bing team, is exclusively available to Windows Phone users. We’re in allows users to join a virtual group and share their location. The app is designed to remove the time and frustration around arranging to meet friends. We’re in will allow friends to automatically share their location so other friends will know when each other are running late to meet at a mall or for dinner.

“We’ve made We’re In super simple to use,” says Microsoft’s Bing program manager Philomena Lobo. We’re in users simply invite their friends using their existing mobile number. The app can then create a virtual meeting that shares each others location and expires at the end of the meeting. We’re in also features a map to locate friends on-the-go. “As each of your friends joins you, their locations appear on the map,” explains Lobo. “If you need to you can pan, pinch and stretch the map to see more or fewer of them. Everyone that joins can see everyone else’s location.”

The application is available immediately for Windows Phone 7 users in the United States. “We’re working on bringing this app to more devices,” in the future promises the Bing mobile team.

“Not available in your location” (Belgium)
Fuck off, again the same US only shit.

So true, same problem here (Belgium too)

We want these U.S. stuff in Belgium too! Why we can’t scan music or barcodes. We can’t use Local Scout and we get everything not with our own language. I’m Dutch and we get French app descriptions.
And why is there no button for the flashlight? Windows Phone, Makes your life so bright…

Inderdaad :D belachelijk dat Marketplace frans is :s (srr for the non-dutch speaking people here)

Exactly what I need, but can’t find it in the marketplace. Is it US only?

    • Stevey

could be the right thing to do, same as

      EasyCap driver

I think it is. I’m in the US and I was able to download it.

  • Morgan

Very cool app. Unfortunately I am the only one of my friends who has a MS phone. I hope this changes with Mango!

    • http://twitter.com/adamUCF Adam

Same here. I like that they’re finally supporting WP7 instead of others (looking at you, photosynth) but this kind of thing is useless without other people and that requires platform agnosticism.

    • Shira

There’s also a web experience that allows you to join an invite, so if you are the only one with a Windows Phone, you can invite your friends and they will join using the web experience

    • http://www.winrumors.com Tom W

True but if it comes to iOS and Android too then it could be v.interesting :)

    • Joe

I agree. I’m the only person i know that uses wp7. This sounds like a service id love to use, soo hopefully either my friends smarten up and get windows phones, or they make the app available to ios and android.

Heh. I’m getting everything on the US Marketplace by disguising as a US user. But you know what? The whole Bing Map thing doesn’t work in China. It’s way more white than any other color in every corner of the country.

Suggest we just don’t bother. If Bing Map doesn’t quite work in your country, this app won’t don you any good either I guess. In Microsoft’s world it’s all water & void & oblivion & probablly little tribes of uncivilized monsters outside the US boundary.

    • Shira

You can switch to Open Street Maps instead of Bing maps! Go to “settings” and change your map type.

    • Jinge

Great, I didn’t know there was the possibility on mobile! Good choice from MS, having 2 sources for the same soft :)

    • Jinge

So once the MS/Nokia deal finalized they may add nokia’s info as well?

    • Matthewmsft

the’ve announced that they will be using Ovi Maps ^_^ so we’ll see a lot more europe-asia stuff comming after the Nokia deal

    • http://twitter.com/Chassit Kane Gao

Thanks for the advice. Glad Microsoft is doing that.

However just found myself not being able to make it to that step. Can’t sign up. It asks for a phone number to get the confirmation code, and the only supported countries are USA and… Israel…???

      Feeling totally defeated.

*sigh* US only again.   The Bing team is really starting to piss me off with this whole free game promo last week and now this..

  • AeqTC

Agreed, not available in the UK.  Sounds great, but why is it just the US!?  I’ve done some programming on Bing, and although much of it is great, its a worldwide mapping software which… er… is only supported in the US…

Please sort it out!  There are more people outside the US than inside and I can’t stand Google.

I wonder why they created an app for this istead of building it into the native bing on the phone, like scout.

    • Mike

I agree, it would be a lot nicer if they made it a native feature.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Bad.Trigger Bart Reding

We want more of that US stuff at Belgium!

  • http://twitter.com/efjay01 Ef Jay

Microsoft really needs to stop these US only releases. If they need to beef up their services overseas they should just make the necessary investment and do it, otherwise the continued neglect makes the platform look bad and lacking compared to the competition and could lead users to just drop the platform or not even bother with it in the first place. Who wants a device that cant be used to its maximum potential when other platforms have no problems with the same functionality?

    • Anonymous

You will see it extended to the rest of the world once Nokia’s maps & navteq services are integrated.  Give it a little time.  Bing hasn’t amassed enough data in other countries besides maybe the UK yet.

    • Anonymous

So what you’re saying is that the platform as a whole should be delayed until everyone is happy?

  • http://twitter.com/theloz Loz Lowe

How do I post a comment on that blog to show my extreme displeasure at the US-only nature of this release? I’ve signed in to the site but there’s no box to fill with venom…

It’s the free games all over again… Don’t they listen to the community? I can understand there being licensing issues with distributing TV shows and movies in other territories, but to restrict a service like this is completely nonsensical. Definitely the biggest challenge facing Windows Phone right now. Sort it out Microsoft!

Also I would like to object to the use of the word ‘peeps’ (“invite your peeps”), although that’s not really the core issue here.

    • Anonymous

How do you this isn’t a licensing issue as well. Microsoft probably licensing the map data for European countries. Maybe they would need a separate license to integrate this feature. I think in the US they created their own maps.

    • http://twitter.com/theloz Loz Lowe

Didn’t think about that… I’d be surprised though, as I have plenty of other apps on my phone, both 1st- and 3rd-party which use embedded Bing maps. I wouldn’t mind if they told us WHY!

    • Andy

I think they closed comments after two microseconds when they realized that almost half of the windows phone users aren’t in US. I also wanted to say congrats on another release that only half the windows phone users can use…

This must stop. And fast. I can’t recommend this phone here until it stops. And it seems it won’t change with Mango

  • Entegy

    US only? *sigh*
Also, after they fix the region lock, I would port it to Android and iOS. More friends=more fun!

    Freaking fabulous…except… I bet…

WE’LL NEVER SEE IT OUTSIDE THE USA ! :)

I’ve just found out that Bing scout and the voice to text in Bing aren’t available if you’re phone language isn’t English!!!! Frustration !

some one tell that hot girl not to move, it’ll take me a bit to get to her!

  • http://twitter.com/jacksonlcg Jackson Loh

not again!! Why only US? MS still living in a bucket..Hello!! there are oceans…If you are seriously listening, do something!

  • DavidPaul

I just installed the app and was shocked to see support for USA and “Israel”??? Israel?? come on USA only is understandable, but Israel then they can very well support India as well. Hmm.. waiting for the Mango release were MS has promised to open their services to lot other countries as well.

  • BieberHole69

any idea if this is available for Mango 7712?

  • http://twitter.com/laurieinseattle Laurie

Why only in the US? For the same reason why I can’t get Europe only releases on entertainment media. Government control by the country. Laws that govern product and media releases are very different world wide. Popular products eventually do make it to a global market after all the red tape has been waded through. Rather than complaining at the product makers, complain to your government they are the challenges behind product releases.

  • Team NZ

Why do we continue to launch a product when its US only when we could wait and make a world wide impact and really begin to change the game ?. Just not sure, hope the launch goes well.
