Developers working to backport Windows 8′s new UI to Windows 7

By Tom Warren, on 8th Jun 11 6:15 pm with 48 Comments

Barely days after Microsoft revealed its new and fresh Windows 8 user interface, people want it on Windows 7, now.

One developer from Italy thinks he has the answer for those eager Windows 7 users waiting on Windows 8. Sergio James Bruccoleri is currently working on an early version of what he calls “Immersive UI” for Windows 7. Bruccoleri described Windows 8′s new user interface as “fantastic” in an email to WinRumors. “Windows 8 is coming in 2012, so I decided to create a concept in Photoshop and one hour later…an application,” he said. Bruccoleri believes the immersive UI is important for the future of Microsoft’s systems and PC technology but he doesn’t want to wait until 2012.

Immersive UI for Windows 7 is in the very early stages but shows interesting promise. Bruccoleri has created an early video of his application and is working on a public beta, due some time in July. The initial offering will come without some effects because Bruccoleri is still working on the application. He plans to include the following features:

  • Custom Tile for Applications and Videogames
  • Split Screen – Multitask like in Microsoft’s video
  • Facebook Push Message on Start Menu
  • New Media Center – browsing pictures, music and videos within the UI
  • Support for Windows 8 7955 (With Application Menu Only for this version)
  • Immersive Browser Included

Microsoft’s new Windows 8 user interface has proved a hit across the web after the software giant revealed it earlier this month. The original “building Windows 8″ YouTube video has clocked up nearly 4 million views in a week. The new user interface takes elements from the company’s Windows Phone 7 software. Microsoft will allow users to launch apps from a tile-based start screen, which replaces the traditional Windows Start menu. Applications include live tile notifications and fluid, natural switching between applications. Microsoft has also built in the ability to snap and resize an application to the side of the screen and multitask outside of the new touch UI. The new applications will be web powered apps built using HTML5 and JavaScript, with full access to the power of the PC.

nice concept, but not sure it’s as fast as the version running win8 on ARM chips.

There’s already a group that’s way ahead of this.  fediaFedia made the Omnimo skin for rainmeter that was akin to wp7 long ago, and soon windows 8.  I definitely suggest taking a look at their work as I’ve enjoyed Omnimo for a while now. http://fediafedia.deviantart.com/

You seem to not understand Sergio’s liking of Windows 8′s Immersive user interface and you also appear to not understand why he decided to develop this project. It’s amusing how you’re rude even when you don’t understand, but that’s also quite sad.

      i don’t understand very well…because i’m italian…But i think it’s a great thing?? Maybe?? i don’t know xD

    • Imgen

It’s amazing that you did this. What language are u using? I guess it’s C# or Adobe AIR. Just amazing. And in so short amount of time. Can I join you to develop this thing. I may not be fulltime, but I will try my best. You can reach me at imgen@hotmail.com. And your photoshop skill is so good.

    • Duncan Fisher

Thank you, can’t wait!  I knew some smart Windows lover out there would mimic the Windows 8 overlay, was just waiting for it. :)

Do you have a website or something we can follow you on?

Inspired by Paul Thurrott’s post about Windows 8, I created a mockup of what my start screen would look like. You can view it here: http://adamhaider.com/post/6327399648/my-personalised-windows-8-start-screen

I just hope in the official release we will be able to change the opacity level of the tiles, change the colours and add a background image instead of a colour.

this is interesting and all but honestly, I don’t like classic apps showing up in the foreground. it is ok to show touch apps in the desktop area but not the other way around. MSFT didn’t just create a touch launcher. It is a brand new shell with its own set of unique apps and totally abandons the desktop metaphor in favor of the metro UI. What is unique about win8 is that the desktop metaphor doesn’t spill out and ruin the touch experience, yet it remains easily accessible and easy to enter/leave.

While interesting, I feel this is just a launcher similar to what HQ was doing with touchsmart.

  • http://twitter.com/oolong2 oolong2

No offense but I think this is going to kind of suck…  Without the support in the shell it’s not going to be much more than a app launcher.

You would probably better of using one of the many nice tablet/touch UIs that have already been made for Windows 7 instead of trying to replicate Windows 8.

While it might have potential, a simple launcher simply doesn’t make sense in win7, you should really find out a way to integrate this with the windowsshell. by the way @Tom: Stop writing this “web powered apps using HTML5 and JavaScript” thingy, as this confuses people and there will actually be several methods of developing those “immersive” apps (http://www.zdnet.com/blog/microsoft/microsoft-needs-to-tell-windows-8-developers-now-about-jupiter-and-silverlight/9608)

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000120366010 Sergio James Bruccoleri

Sure,it’s only a beta ^^ Thank you for Interesting to this ^^

    • http://twitter.com/oolong2 oolong2

I’m sure there will be several methods to develop those tile apps…  However Microsft needs to make some kind of announcement about it.

Telling HALF the story in order to get some press about HTML5 without being clear that other technologies will be supported is one of the biggest blunders Microsoft has ever done….

Right now millions of developers around the world are revaluating the projects they are currently working on, looking at other platforms and technologies, and making strategic decisions all based on that Windows 8 announcement.

The fact that Microsoft is being silent about it despite the huge outcry from the entire development community is pretty shameful.    Developers, developers, developers…..

    • phil jay

Developlers should just inform themselfs better. Win8 is still quite a long way to go and I can’t imagine anyone already making any decisions based on that 10 min presentation.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000120366010 Sergio James Bruccoleri

If Microsoft publics another information. well ;) The Application will update

  • bob

I’m curious to know how Microsoft is going to deal with a user’s 100+ app collection. Perhaps like the Windows Phone mango jump list? Hopefully we’ll see that in Windows 8 video #2.

    • http://www.facebook.com/misak Misak Ghazaryan

yeah i know what u mean, atm i have some doubts about win8 for desktops and laptops, but i hope come septembers build conference theyll be put to rest

umm..  not quite..  sorry.   nice try though.

  • http://twitter.com/mcakins McAkins Online

Immersive UI is not only about shortcutting to your applications, but it about the little little things that combine to form a platform. As informed by Microsoft, IUI is not just a shell, it is a platform.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mitch-Foster/100000527225418 Mitch Foster

You people are f*cking rude… Just saying.

I think everyone understands that he is not going to be able to make the skin operate just like Win8,  but you should give credit where credit is due.

    For f*cks sake, people!

Is he not a developer? Then shouldn’t that mean he know what the capabilities are with this project?
