Facebook for Windows Phone updated to include push notifications

Microsoft has issued an updated for its Facebook Windows Phone application.

The update delivers push notifications to Facebook, clearly an interim solution ahead of built-in native notification support in Windows Phone Mango. The notification settings allow users to pick between Message, Wall Post, Feed comment, Feed comment reply, Photo tag, Photo comment, Tagged photo comment, Photo comment reply etc. Facebook users can also turn on toasts and a live tile count for the notifications, there’s three options available:

  • No Push Notifications
  • Toasts and Tile count
  • Tile Count Only

WPCentral notes that the app now feels a lot smoother and more complete. Facebook for Windows Phone also requests access to sensors on devices and phone identity, presumably for future additional features. Facebook for Windows Phone 2.0 is available immediately in the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Go to the app’s marketplace page to force an update check.

      Thanks, that did it.

How do you “force” an update check?

You can’t force an update check in Mango :( .

Man, Scott Rockfeld looks like a douche.

Good news on the update though, glad to see developers are still on board and bothering to update their apps!

Fantastic news. Installed it and managed to see the push notifications in action. I’m very impressed, and I’ve been waiting for this for ages. Tom, you state “clearly an interim solution ahead of built-in native notification support in Windows Phone Mango.” I’m wondering whether you know: Is there a setting in Mango to enable toasts for Facebook notifications? I’ve read nothing about this in the previews, and I really think they’ll be making a mistake if they don’t enable them natively, as I really would love to have toasts for them. If not, this app should suffice.

I have one major complaint though: They haven’t given us options for push notifications of photo likes, feed post likes, or comment likes. I’m gutted about this. Does anyone know why they chose to leave this out? Couldn’t they have at least given us the option?

Does this run in the background?

I installed it and had to enable push and toast but have yet to see anything. I am on version 2.0 so I am not sure what is wrong.

Got it installed and it’s awesome! :D

This fixes the one biggest issue I had with NoDo.

Does the app needs to be running before receiving those notifications? In other word, don’t exit the app?
    Thanks
