The first Windows 8 UI screenshots leaked on Thursday.

The screenshots, provided by Chinese site Win7China, offer an early glimpse at Microsoft’s Milestone builds of Windows 8. Microsoft appears to be planning Windows Live integration straight into the Windows shell for its next-generation of Windows. The software giant has also provided several wallpapers with a “ssh…lets’ not leak our hard work” written on them. WinRumors has independently confirmed that the screenshots are genuine. The shots come from an early Milestone 2 build of Windows 8, tagged 7910.0.winmain_win8m2.110111.

Microsoft may be preparing to demonstrate its Windows 8 Tablet UI as early as June, according to reports on Monday. Microsoft has a habit of introducing new technologies at the Wall Street Journal’s D: All Things Digital Conference, which will run from May 31 to June 2 this year. Bill Gates introduced Microsoft’s Surface computer in 2007 and the company demonstrated Windows 7 multitouch in 2008. It’s possible that Microsoft might be planning to demonstrate a technology preview of Windows 8 Tablets at the conference this year.

Microsoft may introduce Windows 8 ARM based tablets ahead of a full desktop release according to recent reports. Microsoft’s competitive tablet strategy is believed to be further along than expected. Dell’s recently leaked Tablet Roadmap revealed that the OEM has marked Q1 2012 as its date for a Windows 8 based slate. WinRumors understands that Microsoft has been working on an ARM based version of Windows for nearly a year and that it is laboring hard to bring this to the market as soon as possible. Microsoft has previously promised a “major revamp” of Windows for slate applications, that will come in the next version, Windows 8.

Microsoft has so far been extremely quiet on the Windows 8 front. Windows Chief, Steven Sinofsky, took to the stage at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January to introduce a technology preview of Microsoft’s Windows ARM support and show off an early build of Windows 8. Microsoft is partnering with ARM-based manufactures NVIDIA, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments to produce new Tablet devices. Rumors suggest that Microsoft will create a dual-UI for Windows 8.

Steve Ballmer has described the next release of Windows as the company’s “riskiest product bet”. It is understood that Microsoft will feature deep cloud integration into the future OS to realise its vision of “three screens and a cloud”. One Microsoft employee recently said he believes Windows 8 will be the “most important Windows ever shipped.”

Can’t see a change yet… lets hope its because this is only milestone 2, if this is the same I’m not upgrading because there won’t be any point

Not only is this M2 it says it’s an early one, looking at the date of Jan 11th. We probably won’t see more UI changes till close to beta I think. M3 builds should start to give us an idea though.

Thanks for the info, love the wallpaper. :))
One of the things I’m eagerly awaiting is the UI (I especially want to see MS’s implementation of the 3D desktop aka “Wind”) . People might argue that Aero is ugly or resource intensive (on less powerful PCs) but look at it this way : When you’re using an OS (regardless if it’s OS X, any variation of Linux or Windows) you want to be productive (that’s true for businesses) but for the most time, as a home user, the looks are more important, partly because when you sit in front of the monitor (either of your desktop PC or laptop / netbook, etc) between 4 and 10 hours a day you don’t want to be presented with an ugly GUI.
I’m not that convinced about cloud integration. Yes, I know it’s “the future of computing” but there are moments when you still want to have a local backup (take for example that problem with GMail earlier this week when 0.08% of the users recieved the “500 server error, code 82″ message, all the messages in their inbox being erased.).
As for the rest of the concepts and features, I can’t wait for some hands on with the beta. I think this is the first Win. version I’m really excited about (ok, mabye the second after Win7).

“Wind” was a rumor, nothing more.
The official codename is “MoSh” for “Modern Shell”.

Isn’t “MoSh” the one for the tablet version?

Windows 8 will feature dual UI. Mosh is the tablet UI.

    nothing new!?!?!?

I love these comments where people just look at the UI and say “nothing changed”

    • WP7 user 2

Hmm I was just hoping to see new UI now, everything’s just fine at least for me and looking from right here yes it’s like the same!

I’m totally happy with Windows 7. I will look forward to 8 on a new machine. Really if Live integration is the only major addition I don’t think it make much sense until then. Screen shots look great though.

How is a picture of a mouse installing Windows Live integration? I’ve seen that many times on Windows 7.
As for the “Windows Live Pictures” screen shot, surely that is just where a user can select a user tile, as seen on the welcome screen/start menu? Granted it may also be their messenger/live tile but not really proof of integration.
Are you using these as a cover to reveal some NDA information?

it says, you can login Windows using your Live account, and your avatar will appear on the taskbar.
and .Windows shell settings are roaming with your Live account among machines.

so, there are many interesting rumors on that chinese site, let me translate for you.

1, Windows Phone 8 will be based on Windows 8 ARM kernel.
2, Windows 8 installation speed will be 2.5x faster than Win 7, can be installed in minutes.
boot/shutdown/sleep/wakeup will be super fast too.
3, Windows 8 have a ‘Push Button Reset’ feature so you can get your ‘clean installed’ system back after problems happened, while preserving all settings and data, and Windows will detect the bad-application that caused the problem, then notify you to uninstall it. ( TRANSLATOR: Isnt it System Restore ??? and maybe an enhance version of the ‘Windows Error Reporting’ or ‘Dr.Watson’ to detect which exe or driver crashed. )
4, the touch UI can be customized by OEM parteners.
5, a beta maybe released in June, 2011,
6, Windows 8 will support face recognition, using a camera, or, a Kinect, if available.
7 “you can now set up folder cross multiple hard disk”. (TRANSLATOR: dont know if its Drive Extender or just Library…..)

I hope high system requirements aren’t Microsoft’s downfall.

To everyone saying “There’s nothing new!!!” – This is a M2 build. New UI will likely not be revealed until the first beta, if that.
