Microsoft demonstrates video calling in Windows Phone 7.5 “Mango”

By Tom Warren, on 15th Sep 11 7:03 pm with 32 Comments

Microsoft demonstrated its front facing video calling support inside Windows Phone 7.5 “Mango” on Thursday.

The software giant published a video that shows the Tango video calling application running on a HTC Titan Windows Phone 7.5 device. The support allows third party developers to use forward facing cameras from new Windows Phone 7.5 devices to create video conferencing and calling applications.

Microsoft originally revealed its forward facing camera support earlier this month. HTC unveiled two new Windows Phone 7.5 devices at a special event in London at the start of September. The HTC Radar and Titan will both be available across Europe in October. Microsoft will support forward facing cameras in the Camera application of Windows phone 7.5 but does not include a native video calling app at this time. Check out the video calling demo below.

Mango allows you to switch back and forth between the front and rear cameras with a toggle.

It is in Mango, you can test it on the emulator.

It’s not just you, this doesn’t look like a video demonstrating front facing camera, just the video chat in general (the video title also just mentions “video chat”). It looks like his fingers in the lower left window. It’d be nice if they demonstrated switching back and forth between front and rear cameras.

“A new piece of software from Tango”?  Hmm, isn’t that name of the next minor release of WP7? :D
    This is getting confusing!

    • Anonymous

It’s confusing, but Tango is a 3rd party VOIP app for Android, iPhone, Windows Phone Mango, and on its way to PC.  http://www.tango.me/

But yes, Tango is also the code name for the next release of WP.

      you mean… Mango, right?

Mango= Windows mobile OSTango= an app for the OS

    • Anonymous

Grrr. I said that wrong because I’ve been hearing about Mango for so long it seems it is the current release.

Tango is the code name for the Windows Phone release after Mango.

Tango is also the name of a VOIP app.

“you’re gonna fall in love with windows phone again”.
Correct – People have been so pissed off lately, you must make something happen. But soon man !!! :)

    “he’s always late”.
Hey, I didn’t understand this was a Windows Phone parody :)

… and I don’t know in the U.S. but to me that guy is the least ‘marketable’ testimonial ever !

That said, video call seems well integrated, but until Skype comes, you can’t even chip at the success of Facetime
