Windows Phone New York event

Microsoft is preparing for its “big” Windows Phone event tomorrow by erecting a huge Windows Phone in New York City.

The Windows Phone is located within the pedestrian plaza of Herald Square in New York City. Microsoft is inviting passers by to check out the event at 12 noon on Monday November 7. The software giant is expected to promote Windows Phone in a big way this week as a holiday push of marketing heads to the U.S. market. A Neowin member was able to secure pictures (see below) of the giant Windows Phone. It appears to be made out of several screens that will demonstrate Microsoft’s Windows Phone features.

Microsoft sent invites to press and media outlets last month, inviting them to a “backstage” event on November 7. The invite features Samsung’s Focus Flash and Focus S devices alongside a HTC TITAN. Andy Lees and Joe Belfiore from Microsoft’s Windows Phone team will be on hand alongside a number of other Windows Phone team members. Microsoft is also hosting a number of partners too. Microsoft appears to be planning a “big” announcement as the word is highlighted on the invite with the text, “that’s not the only big thing Windows Phone has planned.”

Microsoft looks set to launch its U.S. AT&T Windows Phone 7.5 devices on November 7. Samsung’s next-generation focus includes a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, 1.4GHz processor, 4G network support and a 1.3MP front facing camera. The rear of the device is equipped with an 8MP camera. The device appears to resemble Samsung’s Galaxy S II Android model. Samsung’s second Windows Phone 7.5 “Mango” device is aimed at the lower price point market. The Focus Flash will include a 3.7-inch Super AMOLED screen running a 1.5GHz processor. The device will also include a 5MP rear camera and front facing camera.

I want one of these in my back yard. Our neighbors would just love it.

  • Hoyoung Won

    Sigh….i wanna work at Microsoft…

    • Guest

Apply. With all the people leaving, it shouldn’t be too hard to get on.

    • Anonymous

      Troll much?

    • Guest

Not paying attention much? A lot of people are leaving. Why do you think the company just pushed through its largest pay increase ever despite the current growth challenges? To try and stem the tide of defections, that’s why.

    • MyNameHere

Well, seeing as MS is ranked as the best global workplace, I’d say your suggestion to apply is actually a good one ;)

    • K G

Yes, all the people are leaving MS, thats how they are producing new products, revamping old ones and still maintaining share. Do you work at MS man??? You are HR manager there or something???
What do you like Apple, the jack sh!t company?

That is awesome! I wish I was in New York right now. I hope they let people do something like having an MMS number for photos to show up as messages on the giant phone. That would be cool.

And I hate to be that guy since it is such an awesome display, but those tiles are not aligned properly as the fourth row of tiles should be cut off at the bottom.

    • Anonymous

since the first row of tiles is aligned with the “right arrow”, yeah, the tiles aren’t aligned, a quick fix is to move the arrow lower.. :)

  • GuitarGoo

Now that’s what I call advertising.

    • Hopeful

They had a similar display in Times Square earlier this year (check YouTube), which apparently didn’t do much ‘for the sales numbers’.  But hopefully, there will be more foot traffic around this display.

Can we stop bashing MSFT for not advertising Windows Phone? Those days are OVER.

Did you know there is a world outside of New York? There are indeed many countries. Many. And I haven’t seen one TV commercial, one banner, one newspaper ad from Microsoft in Europe. Even their Windows Phone website is terrible with outdated info (“Mango coming soon”) and broken links on the front page. Many of the official Windows Phone videos from their YouTube channel aren’t available in Germany because they used music without getting international copyrights.

And if you look closely to these photos you will see that they even don’t show the new IE icon from Mango.

They really have to change their marketing dramatically.

I’m not sure what you’re seeing, but the IE logo on the big Windows Phone in the pictures above looks exactly like the IE logo on my Mango phone.

There *may* be places outside of New York (I’ve heard recurring rumors to that effect), but you will never get anyone who lives here to admit it. :-)

Eh? NY is the advertising capitol of the known universe…

    • Anonymous

Its the same here in the Netherlands..I don’t know the type if goons running Microsoft have lost touch with reality.. How exactly are they going to sell devices ..

    • Anonymous

There are ads in Germany, the screens in Colognes main station display a Nokia WP ad, still no TV ads though.

    • http://twitter.com/ParkerReno Parker Ciambrone

They still don’t exactly do a great job or seem to get carriers to highlight their devices :/

    • Anonymous

What MSFT is trying to do is create enough mindshare with TV ads and these displays so that people go into ATT Wireless, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile and clamor to see Windows Phones! That will force those stores to finally get up to speed on it.

    • Anonymous

I went into my local att today and asked to see the focus S. They brought me to the Flash which as far as they knew was the only WP7 device releasing today. Not only that but the Flash was displayed in the same area as the dumbphones, something needs to happen.

    • Anonymous

Went to my ATT store at THE prominent mall in Cincinnati. Focus Flash and Focus S were not on display. Asked if they had them. Was told they would not be putting them on display until the 23rd of November because they would be moving locations. ATT corporate told them not to bother with displaying them when they would be moving in 3 weeks. Sales rep said he did have them to display though. Handed me two open boxes. Neither device had the battery in. Neither device was set up so even if I had put the battery in I would of had to set them up. Backs were not on either device. Plastic coverings were still dangling from them. All in all the presentation made the phones look like broken, used, non-functional devices. This is the manner Microsoft’s premium ATT handsets will be displayed for the first 3 weeks of their launch in Cincinnati’s premium shopping center.

If a company can’t present 100% of the products they carry in a perfect manner, that indicates a shoddy company. I don’t know if Verizon, Sprint & T-Mobile do similar things. But now you know why Apple has their own stores, to completely ensure perfect retail experience. So when the time comes for me, I’m going to the Microsoft Store because at least there I know the phones are going to be presented perfectly and the sales people will understand the OS and be able to explain me details.

    That’s certainly an impressive erection.

I wonder if it was done to redirect certain web traffic to Windows Phone sites?

Then I could take it home once their campaign is done! =D

I am really hoping we see the HTC Titan with Beats Audio and 32GB.  I know Beats is a marketing thing but that is exactly what we need for WP7 to be taken as a serious challenger to IOS and Andriod devices.  With Andy and Joe there, maybe we will even get announcements on Tango or Apollo.

    *pokes Tom*

Alright, spill it… what’s going on?

  • TheTruthHurts

    What I’d give for a rock…

i know i am dreaming but i hope the “big announcement” is a wp7 for verizon, the samsung flash on verizon would be awesome. if MS really wants wp7 to be sucessfull we need some decent handsets on big red. please MS i am ready to leave android but i can’t wait until next summer, i have already waited all this year.

    • randy williams

The hell with the Flash I want the Focus S or the Nokia Ace…

  • Anonymous

    It’s the erection..

    • Anonymous

Ok, enough with the erection jokes.

  • Anonymous

Cool, but the devices are still, well, sub-par. Samsung looks and feels cheap, HTC is the same HTC we’ve seen for the last 4 years, no Nokia, no other phones. Compare that to the small army of Android phones and the industrial engineering candy iPhone and Windows phone (hardware-wise) begins to look limited and pale.

      Good things take time.

      Patience mini padawan.

How much time do they need?

Market share does not equate to the vintage wine, it doesn’t get better with age sitting undisturbed.

I honestly wanted to upgrade my HTC Surround to something else this fall, although HTC still works just as well as it did out of the box. I though, yeah, I don’t really need a new phone, but let’s help the platform and upgrade, giving my old device away to someone who doesn’t have a smartphone. Now I look around and there isn’t any good reasons to go out and spend $500-700. The phones are marginally better, not worth the hassle of upgrade. I am sure there are plenty of people who think similarly. OEM have set for a year prepping new devices and Focus S is all they could come up with?

Wait till MWC or at least CES.

That phone would be a b***h to fit in a pocket xDDD

still haven’t seen a single wp7 ad where I live ( Netherlands) and wp7 was supposed to have been launched couple of months back . I went to the store to checkout some wp7 devices and not a single one of  the carrier had a device for people to try out whiles android devices were all over the place. How exactly do you sell a phone with this kinda attitude?

  • Anonymous

What are they going to show off 4 phones? This big news better be more phones. They cant exactly include older phones because they are being phased out. This “Big” announcement better be “Big” . I only hope.

  • http://www.pricenext.in/ Rongku

They need to do that badly to survive in the war against android… lost to google/apple and to android finally

  • BigChiefSmokem

Too bad that handset design looks like crap. Shoulda used the Nokia.

  • Dalgarven

Clean your lens before taking shots! :-)   Same thing happened when you took trial shots with the new Nokia.

Not that I am losing any sleep over this, but the photo credit should go to me. I posted these images at wpcentral.com.
