Microsoft prepares to BUILD its Windows 8 future

Microsoft's BUILD conference

Microsoft is on the eve of the most significant sea of change for the Windows operating system since Windows 95.

The software giant is preparing to tell its developer story at its first BUILD conference in Anaheim, California on Tuesday. Microsoft’s Windows chief, Steven Sinofsky, will take to the stage on Tuesday and fully reveal Windows 8 to the world. Microsoft’s development strategy is the key piece of a largely untold Windows 8 story but the company is eager to breach beyond the basics. BUILD will delve into Windows 8 to unveil the core new features of Microsoft’s next-generation operating system.

Described by Microsoft’s own CEO, Steve Ballmer, as the company’s “riskiest” product bet, Windows 8 has to deliver at BUILD. Microsoft needs to wow developers with its approach and provide a unique way to experience Windows across PCs, laptops, tablets, phones and TVs. The company’s strong product convergence should prove that it is serious about new form factors and technologies. It’s now up to developers to heed Microsoft’s message and embrace the multiple ways that Windows 8 apps will be accessible from across a number of different devices and experiences. Expect to see Windows Phone apps on Windows 8, Xbox LIVE baked in and some surprises along the way. All the signs point to some impressive integration and a real ecosystem for all devices.

Stepping closer towards BUILD

Sinofsky has woken Windows from its recent stupor. His first act was to clean up Vista with a stable, well thought out Windows 7 operating system. His second act builds on Windows 7 and sets Windows 8 up for a future where device types change faster than the weather. Stay tuned to WinRumors over the next few days to see exactly what’s in store.

Welcome Windows 8, we’ve been expecting you.

BUILD will be bad ass. Who is ready for that preview build of Windows 8? *raises hands*

When they release the public beta, I wonder how many of those core i5 Samsung Win7 slates will suddenly be bought.

At least one because I’m buying one.

      A final guess…
Can one theory explain all things MS was saying/doing ?
I propose the following “Standard Model”:
      MS is …
      * Creating an ALTERNATIVE NET “H5JS” Framework in which they are implementing some VERY LOW-LEVEL CHANGES …
      * Replacing DirectX with the HTML5 RENDERING ENGINE.
      * Replacing MSIL with Javascript (Javascript AS AN “IL” ONLY NOT AS A PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE). C#/VB/.. COMPILERS “EMITING” JSIL.
      * Implementing Silverlight/WPF/XNA in a layer on top of HTML5 (not side-by-side with HTML5), DRAWING IN A HTML5 CANVAS. See: http://jsil.org/ and also search “WP7 UIElementRenderer”.
      * Viewing the HTML5 Browsers as “Plugins” (JSVMs) for the different Operating Systems and adding also Out-of-Browser (OOB) functionality for each OS. USING HTML5 Browsers AS “TROJAN HORSES”.
Can you imagine the impact on portability ?
Can you imagine the impact on Java based systems ?

Haha I was going to say the same thing and saw your comment.
Maybe someone will ask for rule 34 on the Samsung tablet -_-

There is a bright future ahead for Windows if you ask me! I hope they really do wow us! Thanks for the update! :)

W8 (idiots, it stands for wait) stfu

  • Aa

i am worried about our hyped expectations; when expectations are so high, there is atleast *some* disappointment always around.

Hope it won’t be that bad.

    • Aa

if it fails the hype, then nobody other than microsoft to blame for that hype.

    • Jinge

I agree, even if W8 looks great, I am not 100% sure everybody will be able to enjoy the difference.
But 1 thing sure, W8 on tablets (& ARM) is a great thing! It will stop this android expansion on tablets, where it is as good as symbian for smartphones… And maybe push google to make it better there, or more adapted to compete with MS!

    • Anonymous

I’m afraid there will not be much more than we know today: the desktop will look like Windows 7, the start screen has Live Tiles much like the Zune PC client. Developers can create HTML5 or Silverlight apps for the new immersive experience and Windows Phone 8 apps and games and Xbox arcade games will run on Windows 8 too. You can pin web sites as apps to the start screen and MS will demonstrate this for Bing and Hotmail.

The most important news will be the next version of Visual Studio to create HTML5 apps.

I don’t say this isn’t enough or bad, but they will not fulfill the high expectations.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KTAHVKS2RNDWTQPHQEJALLRNEQ Adam Paris

Thats only a small part of what MS has to show. You think that whats known in the news is the only thing that Win8 will bring? What about Ribbon explorer, built-in ISO, VHD, Hyper-V? These are only a small part of whats possible in Win8.

Btw, the desktop UI has been redesigned. But i am sure you missed that part, because all you want to do is bash MS.

  • Jinge

//build/ : the new way of writing files path? Or the web integration of W8?

Windows 8 (more worth is waiting..)

  • Anonymous

build will ultimately come, I have waited too long for it. but the problem is: how can I make it to 2012  to get the real thing. damn, this patience is killing me.

    • Aaron

I finally got one of those cheap Touchpads to hold me over.  Now I can wait for a good W8 tablet rather than having to grab the first one.  My priority list: Quad core Intel (for x86 compatibility).  8+ hr battery life.  ~10 inch screen.  Intel WIDI. HDMI out. USB 3.0. >=2 pounds.

yeahhh…. and  2 gig ram, that would be a damn killer.

    • Aaron

These days I forget to mention RAM considering you can get 4GB sticks for under 20 bucks.  For any company to not include 4GB by default would be lunacy.

  • markusdevine

Just got myself a virtual machine client so I can get the sweet pre-release of Win8 after the conference. Cannot wait, please do not take a year to be released! And please make the pre-release available to the public from the start.

Windows 8 Will Kick Mac OS X Lion Out The Window! :D

    • AB

In my humble opinion it will do nothing but show that MS is not able to handle the business sector anymore. Facebook gets more important than an Outlook-sync? What a company….

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KTAHVKS2RNDWTQPHQEJALLRNEQ Adam Paris

Please go away. MS showed that it can handle the business sector perfectly. The difference is that fanboys like you only focus on certain features just to bash, but you forget that Windows 8 has enough stuff for professionals :)

    • Anonymous

yeah stuff like hyper-V in windows 8 isn’t enough for ”my humble opinion” idiots like you.

and do you think they have shown everything they will be release? or you got your hands in the build they will show this week? oh yeah, you dont, and you have no idea how MS is working in windows, and you arent in business sector.

    • Anonymous

      what?!?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Viki-Maverick/100002523433166 Viki Maverick

OMG OMG OMG. I really envy the developers who would be getting the Samsung Win 8 tablets for free.  Awesome Dawsome…

Just give us the Beta for testing already.

    • Anonymous

Interesting definition of “free”. How much did developers had to pay to attend BUILD? $1.700?
      ;)

    • Kitabul Arerr

      You sound CHEAP, lol!

    • Aaron

No, the question is how much did their companies pay to send them.  I doubt anyone is going to BUILD on their own personal dime.  My manager was just about to approve me to go when registration sold out :(

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1601349302 Chow Mun Leong

the conference pic looks beautiful… metro in full effect

  • Kitabul Arerr

Can’t wait. Shall be glued on my screen at tomorrow’s keynote. BTW, it will be dumb to name win8, anything other than win8!

  • Aaron

I hope MS shows a demo of Intel WIDI on a Windows 8 tablet.  I honestly think that would be a killer feature for Win8 tablets.  Imagine Win8 start screen experience on your TV and controlling it with your tablet wirelessly like a remote.

  • http://twitter.com/tonycubed Tony

Tom, what time will the conference start for UK users tomorrow?  Also, will their be live streams of this event? I remember hearing that only the major would be streamed, I’m just wondering where the right place will be to check this out.  Because as much as I’d like to actually read blog posts, I rather watch it. :P

  • Louyunlong

I like windows 8 ,but i don’t have tablet pc..my english is very bad ..

  • BigChiefSmokem

Tom can you or the other bloggers raffle off some conference swag??

i want some stickers, posters or something to put in my cube to let these other devs know about the future a little

  • http://twitter.com/chr158r0wn Chris Brown

Does anyone know if/where I can watch a stream of the keynote?

    • BigChiefSmokem

Your name is really Charlie and not Chris, amirite??

  • http://twitter.com/chr158r0wn Chris Brown

Does anyone know if/where I can watch a stream of the keynote?

  • Anonymous

I’ll be impressed if Windows 8 integreates with WP7 and Xbox apps, otherwise, i’m just “enthusiastic” about the tablet / fast boot experience.  I would hate to wait for windows 9, Windows phone 8 and xbox 720 to get an integrated experience..

  • Lukas Leitenberger

    is there a live stream?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=11814278 Chris Woelfel

Yes, MS will be streaming it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=11814278 Chris Woelfel

9AM pacific = 12 noon EST. So I guess I’ll be eating lunch in the office watching the keynote. Darnit, tomorrow is so far. I need to partition my HD (or just go buy another one) on my desktop so if MS releases the bits tomorrow I’ll have a clean slate to install Windows 8 on! :D

  • Guest

hi there! can somebody tell me when windows 8 will be release for download? tomorrow? i want it right now :)

And what is the first thing a person who buys Apple does after they realize that it’s all eye candy with no core functionality? That’s right; put Windows on it so you can get something done. :)

  • http://twitter.com/pierrerv Pierre Venescar

Windows 8 will be the mother of all other OS’s out there. (android, crackberry, ios, mac lion, webOS, bada, symbian, meego…) they’ll need windows 8 in order for them to perform properly

    • Anonymous

lol wut? OSX/iOS doesn’t need Windows for anything!
