Microsoft sent Mozilla a congratulatory cake on Tuesday for shipping Firefox 4.
The software giant sent a similar cake in 2008 when Mozilla originally shipped Firefox 3, and it appears the trend has continued. Microsoft’s latest cake is almost identical to the previous one. Mozilla shipped Firefox 4 on Tuesday and reached 3 million downloads only hours after release. Mozilla claims this is 135 downloads per second – 8200 per minute. Despite Microsoft’s Internet Explorer cake efforts, the company’s marketing team made a booboo on Tuesday. Microsoft paid for a promoted tweet of Internet Explorer 9 to appear in the Firefox search results on Twitter. The company was quick to trash the marketing stunt after complaints started rolling-in on the social networking site.
Internet Explorer 9 was released to the web on Monday March 14 and clocked up 27 downloads per second, over 250 downloads every 10 seconds. Microsoft claims it reached 2.3 million Internet Explorer 9 downloads in just 24 hours. Mozilla smashed this figure only hours after its release, meanwhile the company is celebrating its release with bear costumes and now a cake from Microsoft.
