Microsoft switching from gloss to matte Xbox 360 consoles

Microsoft revealed on Friday that the company plans to switch to a matte finish for all their Xbox 360 models.

The software giant revealed the change to combat Internet rumors that suggested the company would offer matte and gloss finishes in future. “We are actively transitioning all our Xbox 360 S consoles to a matte finish,” said Microsoft’s Larry Hryb in a blog post on Friday. “The consoles will start to arrive in stores over the coming weeks, so if you really love the idea of a glossy console don’t wait much longer.”

Microsoft didn’t reveal the reasons behind the change but it’s believed matte finish consoles will reduce manufacturing costs and the requirement for two types of cases. Microsoft ships its Xbox 360 4GB model with a matte finish and its Xbox 360 250GB with a gloss finish at the moment. The company isn’t killing off gloss for every console though. Limited edition consoles like the upcoming Gears of war 3 console and the Star Wars console will still feature a gloss finish.

Great news, I held off upgrading my Elite because I was not going to move from matte to a gloss finish. I’m not a fan of the fingerprint look.

How often do you actually touch your console? It doesn’t show fingerprints, it’s black and it’s an appliance so generally you set it up and touch it when you move it to someone’s place if you’re into that. I really like how the shiney one looks, it presents itself way better than you’d think from the photos etc. The matte seems like it would look a bit cheaper, just by being matte, but I have no idea.

dust also sticks to gloss a lot more.

I have my console on my desk along with my uni books so I come into contact with it much often than you would imagine. In addition it’s a personal preference.

Actually the matte finish doesn’t look cheap at all, in my opinion. That’s because the “grain” of the matte finish is very fine.

I like the matte finish much better than gloss. I welcome this change, but now the Kinect camera won’t match the console.

My Kinect is next to my TV, which has a glossy bezel … so that matches okay.  However, I’m still sporting the white 360 anyway.

I personally like the matte finish. I wonder if Microsoft will passing the savings from decreased manufacturing cost to us?

      They already have you n00b.

Matte is SO much better!  This is great news!  I’m holding off getting an Xbox until the next generation (however long it takes) and I hope they also use matte for those too.

This is going to change the face of the world!

I think they will end up all in matte, both the console and the kinect device…fingers crossed…but still positive..

Major Nelson said in the comments section of his post that the Kinect would remain glossy.
