Microsoft launched a new Windows Phone 7 API mapping tool on Friday.
The new tool aims to attract more iPhone developers to Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 platform. The API mapping tool allows iOS developers to quickly discover the equivalent API for any Windows Phone applications they are building. “iPhone developers can grab their apps, pick out the iOS API calls, and quickly look up the equivalent classes, methods and notification events in WP7,” says Microsoft’s senior technical evangelist Jean-Christophe Cimetiere. “A developer can search a given iOS API call and find the equivalent WP7 along with C# sample codes and API documentations for both platforms.”
Cimetiere admits that the tool is still a “work in progress” but promises that more iOS APIs will be mapped soon. Microsoft has focused on Network/Internet, User Interface and Data Management API mappings for the initial release of the tool. The company warns not to expect a mapping for all of the APIs due to the different nature, architectures and user interfaces of both
