Microsoft is planning to open its ninth retail store in Spring.

The software giant announced the location of a new store on Monday and promised a Spring launch. Microsoft’s ninth retail store will be located in the Lenox Square Mall in Atlanta, Georgia. Following tradition, Apple also has a retail store inside the same mall. Microsoft is expected to launch the new store during April.

Microsoft launched its eighth retail store in California last week. Microsoft recently launched its seventh retail store just 15 minutes from the company’s headquarters in Bellevue. The software giant also launched its biggest retail store in the Mall of America in November. The store, which is 8,600 total square feet, is directly opposite an Apple store. Microsoft also has the two stores located in Scottsdale, Arizona and Mission Viejo, California, and a third store in Park Meadows Mall – Lone Tree, Colorado. Microsoft also has stores in San Diego and the recently opened Oakbrook store. Microsoft’s Mall of America store saw long queues as customers scrambled for freebies and the recently launched Kinect for Xbox 360.

Microsoft will open a ninth store this year in Seattle. Microsoft is also rumored to be launching stores in New York, Houston and Orlando later this year too. The Microsoft Stores offer all of the Microsoft products found through online retailers and inside major retail chains, including keyboards and mice, Windows 7, Xbox 360 and many more products. Apple currently has 222 stores in the United States alone, and 287 total stores worldwide, including 27 in the UK and 14 in Canada.

Nice, finally some bigger cities I guess. Time to hit up LA, NYC, Chicago etc. Oh and come over to the EU at some point as well.

You can thank Apple for Microsoft’s store idea!

To a certain point, I’ve been to the Oakbrook store several times and its actually quite different than the Apple store. People seem to think that its a carbon copy but its really not.

In a way, it’s a similar layout… a lot of people nowadays rely on relating visually. One might say, “Looks like an Apple store, maybe I’m gonna go in and have a look see.” :D

I find the Microsoft stores more colorful. The Apple stores in my area are a bit too plain…

Actually Apple can thank Microsoft fot the idea as well as Dell, Gateway, and Sony. Microsoft had a concept store in San Francisco back in 1999. Microsoft had been planning this years ago. Plus Microsoft owns most of the Apple patents including their retail patents. Why? Because back in the late 90′s Apple was facing bankruptcy and Microsoft started acquiring some of their assets including patents. People who don’t understand how Apple and Microsoft ended up with retail stores will blindly believe Microsoft copied Apple but do your history. Not the case.

James Goldsmith knows the history and he is right. If we go into specifics the concept behind the style of Apple Stores, are based from the concept Gateway stores that didn’t came to be beyond their flagship store as they collapsed around those times. Other simply came from the style of high end boutique clothe stores. Easy as that.

Microsoft should open a store across from every Apple store, then maybe some fun will occur!

Surprised that they don’t have any here in the Bay Area yet… Silicon Valley is tech shopping center. :D
