New Nokia 800 “Searay” Windows Phone photos leak

By Tom Warren, on 25th Oct 11 9:26 am with 55 Comments

On the eve of Nokia’s big announcement, two new photos of the Nokia 800 Windows Phone have surfaced.

The photos show off the front and rear of the Nokia 800, known by its codename “Searay”. The photos do not reveal much more than we already know about Nokia’s first Windows Phone but they do demonstrate the simplistic and curved nature of Nokia’s first Windows Phone. The rear of the device is also flanked with a camera and LED flash. The 800 is expected to be made available in black, blue and pink after the announcement tomorrow. The Next Web leaked the images on Tuesday and note that Nokia’s second Windows Phone device, codenamed Sabre, could be a smaller variant of the 800.

Teaser commercials for Nokia’s first Windows Phone started to air over the weekend on British national TV. The commercials appear to Windows buttons of a mystery device and an LED. The device resembles Nokia’s “Searay” Windows Phone and also matches recently leaked marketing material for Nokia’s 800 Windows Phone, known previously as the SeaRay. Nokia is expected to start selling its Windows Phone devices in November.

Reports on Monday suggest that Nokia may not release their Windows Phone devices in U.S. markets initially. Nokia is reportedly preparing a marketing push in the U.S. where Nokia is focused on an “Amazing Everyday” marketing approach. “Hidden away in the everyday landscape are billions of little adventures,” the brief says. “And the new Nokia with Windows Phone makes it easier to find them, to take part in them and to share them.” Nokia CEO Stephen Elop admitted in a company earnings call last week that Nokia would launching in “select” markets initially. Elop revealed that the company plans to extend the N9′s industrial design to future Nokia products.

Nokia World kicks off in London on Wednesday and WinRumors will be reporting live from the event. Stay tuned for all the latest on Nokia’s Windows Phones.

In fairness, this isn’t something that we haven’t already seen. Still, it’s a good lookin design and I really hope they’ve made it thinner from the N9 (12.1mm at it’s thickest is too fat for late 2011 in my opinion).

    • http://twitter.com/zeduffman Luke

If you make it too thin you can’t hold it properly.

    • http://techin5.com Jubbin Grewal @Techin5.com

I don’t really believe that’s true. Samsung Galaxy S 2 is around 8.5mm, and that’s nice to hold. The Moto Droid RAZR will be 7.1mm at it’s thinnest. I’m not saying it should be that thin, but below 10mm would be better.

    • http://twitter.com/zeduffman Luke

Well the edges of the N9 are tapered, so if it’s the feel you’re after then it’ll be fine. If you’re talking about shaving 3mm of space in your pocket then perhaps not. Personally, I’d rather have that space for a slightly larger battery!

Its not necessary. I also prefer thin phones, but if it feels good and the quality is perfect then i dont mind a thick phone.

are they going to release multiple colours?? because this colour doesn’t attract me..

    • http://techin5.com Jubbin Grewal @Techin5.com

Blue, Black and Pink that you see above.

    • Anonymous

nice.. i hope the blue one is the same as the N9′s..

Everyone seems to be assuming that Nokia are going to come out tomorrow with killer hardware that bests the iPhone, I’m not seeing any evidence to support this yet. 1 day to go…

    • Anonymous

      “Ace” up the sleeve, brother!
      *fingers crossed*

    • Anonymous

      Everything’s crossed buddy :)

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KTAHVKS2RNDWTQPHQEJALLRNEQ Adam Paris

The build quality and design bests the iPhone in every single part. If you are expecting dual-core, go buy laggy Android or overpriced iPhone 4S.

Everyone wants Nokia, because you will also get free Navigation.

    • Anonymous

      Hi Adam,
Believe me, the last thing I want is dual-core – that’s not what I was alluding to.
I know that the measure of which is “best” is totally subjective, I’m just saying that from the screenshots above there’s nothing that makes it look any more desirable (to me) than an iPhone. I await tomorrow with interest…

Just watch that review (and imagine that the os would be mango):
      http://www.viddler.com/explore/engadget/videos/3410/
Now tell me, that you don’t like it…
      It is really really sweet.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2WNLCWLJUCZ3WEHQUXJOVWISBA Wizard

I do not think it will be as good as iPhone 4S (in relation to specs), but yes, sure, it will be a killer phone, you can rely on Nokia’s Hardware combined with MS software(OS). Hopefully, this will take both Nokia and WinPhones to next level. I always liked Nokia hardware but their Symbian OS always let everyone down. I already have a HTC HD7, but now am waiting for Nokia to launch their Win phones in UK, hopefully, it would be available on 3 network. Cheers!!!

    • Anonymous

They are assuming this because of reviews of the hardware for the N9. As Engadget said its the best built phone they have ever seen including the iPhone 4. That’s coming from a site that is very pro Apple.

    • Jon Keebler

They did say that… but mark my words, when the 800 comes out they will spin it like it doesn’t have the same build quality as the N9…Even know it does, becuase thats Engadget for you.

    • Anonymous

I can’t argue with you there. While praising the hardware they did hate on WP7 and say Meeting was better. Every other review has said Meego is nice but buggy. Like Vlad’s review from thisosmynext.

Keep your dual core and give me 32GB of storage with a super amoled screen and the top of the line camera. I don’t need uber games and neither do most end users. What I do need is a crystal clear and bright screen with incredible battery power and a camera that makes me forget about my point and shoot forever. My guess is the average user wants those same things.  I say this with confidence because not everyone drives a sports car but almost everyone wants a good stereo, good gas mileage and safety features.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KTAHVKS2RNDWTQPHQEJALLRNEQ Adam Paris

If it has the same Clear Black Amoled screen as the N9, then it will be on the same level of quality as SAMOLED Plus.

    • http://techin5.com Jubbin Grewal @Techin5.com

No it’s lower than SAmoled plus I believe. Least that’s what I’ve read.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KTAHVKS2RNDWTQPHQEJALLRNEQ Adam Paris

Well, Engadget said it was on the level of SAMOLED so i am sure it will be a good screen. I dont know if they meant Plus or the normal one.

    • OMG55

You would be correct, this was stated at least a month ago. I wish these people would stop crying foul all of the time. When MS sign the deal with Nokia, everyone in the forum was bragging about how Nokia makes great solid hardware with good cameras and screens. Now all I’m reading is will it be Amoled, is the camera MP good? shutup already, you’re either going to buy it or not. I trust Nokia and like the design better than most of the current phones that all look the same.

    • Anonymous

Correct if its the same as the n9 its on par with SAMOLED Plus.

    • OMG55

Please stop whinning about storage, haven’t you heard, your music, docs, pics, contacts will be stored in the cloud and not directly on the phone. Those days are pretty much coming to an end. But suckers like you will continue to spend your money on the wrong item. Soon you will simply be purchasing you cell phone for design and the camera. I can access 250 employee pictures via my WP7 in a couple of seconds from my skydrive. See how fast 250 pics or songs load that are stored locally on the device. Heck even Apple stated that in the future phone storage wont matter much due to their skydrive copying icloud.

    • James

Because all regions have great data plans… The future is not now.
Anyway many people would just rather store things  locally.

    • Anonymous

because data plans cap the amount you download. If you start streaming your music everyday, you will have overage charges. If you travel abroad, roaming charges are expensive. In addition, my car has a USB port. I don’t think I can play music through my car stereo by streaming. I need it on my phone. An additional 16gb of memory isn’t very expensive. If you don’t add internal memory, at least give us a microSD.

    • http://www.facebook.com/hamzah.mohamed1 Hamzah Mohamed

There are probably less than 3 EU countries that have bandwith caps. EU is Nokia’s turf.
Also, buy a cheap PMP, hell, an iPod if you’d like. You can’t have that large of a library.

    • Anonymous

So I need to have 2 devices when the smart phone is more than capable of handling my need. Nokia is planning on selling their phones in the US, right? And the US is one of the largest markets. Most phones here have 32 and 64 GB options. If Nokia wants to compete here, they will have to offer these options. Besides, the memory doesn’t cost that much more and actually gives the device maker a profit. Apple charges $100 more for 16 GB of additional memory. I’m sure it cost a lot less for them to buy the memory.

    • Anonymous

I disagree on the game part. Teens are a big part of the smartphone market. I know a lot of parents buying smartphones for their kids. Games are important to them. They will be buying phones for a very long time. If you want to see what happens to a company that only appeals to older people, look at Oldsmobile.

  • Tom Warren

Nice post steal there Tom, maybe giving a bit more credit to where you sourced the images and content from.

“Winrumors, no original content since 10/23/2011″

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KTAHVKS2RNDWTQPHQEJALLRNEQ Adam Paris

First, you are pathetic. Second, if you read the story there is a source right there in the middle.

    • Tom Warren

      Adam,

Yes, I’m aware of that, he makes no attempt to give credit for the images, nor has he actually credited the images.

    • http://techin5.com Jubbin Grewal @Techin5.com

Look troll, it’s right there under the “The Next Web leaked the images on Tuesday “. Read the second paragraph. Click on the link that says ‘The Next Web’.What is it? Oh it’s a link to the SOURCE.
I can’t believe I actually had to explain this to you.. seriously..

      Sit down.

“The Next Web leaked the images on Tuesday”

This idiot is Rafael Rivera. He has been randomly messaging people who comment here at WinRumors via Twitter. He’s majorly jealous of Tom’s success and is completely butt hurt. Check out his Twitter – twitter.com/withinrafael – he’s a general asshat.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KTAHVKS2RNDWTQPHQEJALLRNEQ Adam Paris

Keep the nonsense for yourself. Rafael only responds with his own account and not with a fake Tom Warren account.

      This is just a troll.

    • Anonymous

So why is his latest post a “tip techmeme” for TNW. He always does this when he gets angry after Tom posts something sourced to another site. He says in his Twitter he’s banned from commenting here so of course he would setup a fake account to troll.

    • Anonymous

We don’t come to winrumors for exclusive news articles.  We come here because Tom has a good perspective on the articles he posts, the articles cut straight to the news and are not full of mockery and fanboy opinions like Engadget is, and the site is very clean and nicely designed.

Tom is posting these by himself and there are times when he doesn’t get articles up straight away, that is why we check many of the other tech sites as well.   You seem to ignore that he does reference the sources of his articles,  and you ignore that other sites like Engadget do no different.

    • http://www.mainstreetchatham.com/ JimmyFal

I come here to get a consolidated source of up to date news on Windows and WPH7, to vent my frustrations in all their uncensored glory; and to KNOW that after I have posted, my comments will appear and not be filtered through to only display the content that they wish to appear. Not sure what goes on at ZDNET but I’ve wasted too many words typing only to have my posts disappear in to the cloud. In this  day and age it’s nice to have a place to VENT our frustrations about the products we use every day, and are pretty damn passionate about, and to know that POSSIBLY a Brandon Watson, might be listening and learning a bit about what makes the people that use the products tick. Nice job Tom, and nice job leaning away from attention grabbing whoring for readership headlines like pretty much ALL of the larger tech blogs do. Two thumbs up here buddy.

    • http://www.mattbrian.com Matt

Considering I was the person who the images were leaked to and I am a good friend of Tom’s, I have no issue with him using the images – I knew he would credit us and he did.

As you were fake Tom Warren.

    • Anonymous

Tom rocks, always has and always will so get over it, deal with it and jog on.

    • Anonymous

this is an aggregation site. Tom doesn’t have a team of reporters writing articles. He gathers news from around the web and sometimes adds his own perspective. I appreciate the work he does since I don’t have search for each windows related article. No one here expects original content, because that is not the purpose of this site.  Since Tom gives his source in the article and the photo is watermarked, he is not stealing anything.

I bet Nokia will success with WP, but there cannot make an impact and success like when first iPhone introduced. They have abandoned the MeeGo OS which has perfect phone OS and not try to push it to the end.

    • http://twitter.com/vlastimilcerny Vlastimil Cerny

Well, how would you measure the Nokia success? If you are going to measure it by the amount of sold phones, than Apple is still far behind.

  • Penta2100

Apple was right. no one “Get;s it”. Its what the costumer wants. not what you want Mr.CEO.

    • Anonymous

Cos Apple never built what the CEO wanted, did they? Rigggghhhhhtt….

    • http://twitter.com/zeduffman Luke

      >implication one phone can suit everybody.
      >implication that phone is the iPhone.

      I lol’d.

It’s Nokia 800, not Nokia N800. The “N800″ is an internet tablet released back in 2007. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_N800

    • http://www.winrumors.com Tom W

      Thanks, fixed.

Nokia searay should also come in ‘Mango’ color to complement Mango version.

  • http://twitter.com/alexwilks88 Alex Wilks

Nice to see they appear to have stuck the front-facing camera in the right place. Bottom-right never seemed to make much sense to me.

  • Anonymous

Looks like an awesome phone..just hope nokia pulls some of the old magic back out…. nobody does phones quite like nokia.

  • Anonymous

Front Facer? D. I’m in love with this design but a front facing camera is a deal breaker./ the n9 had one, come onnnnnnn.
