New Windows Phone NoDo update method for all devices, even AT&T

A new Windows Phone Update workaround has been developed and released on Monday.

The workaround allows all Windows Phone devices to receive the NoDo update, regardless of their carrier testing. AT&T Samsung Focus owners will now be able to load the NoDo update in a simple and quick fashion thanks to ChevronWP7 developer Chris Walshie. The update involves using a simple application on a Windows PC. Walshie has unlocked the wrapper process for Microsoft’s Windows Phone updates and simply pushes the NoDo and updates to devices. Walshie explains he:

“Whipped up a little application to flash pre-NoDo (7008), NoDo (7355), NoDo update 1 (7389) & NoDo update 2 (7390) all in a single process.  No I don’t care which carrier you are on, which phone you have, it’ll just update your phone accordingly.”

The method is available immediately but be warned this may cause adverse effects. Here’s the steps:

  1. Download Windows Phone Support Tool – x86 or x64
  2. Download ChevronWP7 Updater – x86 or x64.
  3. Install both applications
  4. Launch ChevronWP7 updater and select your language. Do NOT update if your language is not present.
  5. If you’re updating from build 7004 then run the updater twice

Walshie also explains the method may work for HTC HD2 owners who have flashed custom Windows Phone 7 ROMs to their devices.

    Just did this on my Focus. No errors. It did take a while, but nothing like updating my iphone. NoDo took the longest @441 seconds. On reboot all my apps were there.

    Wow – this looks pretty awesome. I’ve still not been able to get the pre-update on my Samsung Omnia so will probably give this a go…

    So this requires no unlocking or hacking or any sort??? Ive hit a dead end trying to even unlock my Focus. I got it unlocked, then it re-locked, and I cant get Chevron to connect again. This would be fantastic if it works well!!!

      Awesome…thats good news! Any idea if it will work with Windows XP? I have Pro with SP3…but in my experience, WP7 tools dont seem to jive with XP…including Chevron. I dont want to brick my phone because XP decides to have a fit.

    Tried this on my focus (Win7 64bit) and it didn’t work. It looked like it was working, said it was downloading and installilng the update, but after it was done the version number was the same on the phone.

      Hmm sounds like a connection issue then, did you try rebooting the device and machine and try again?

      I had the same problem on my t-mobile uk omnia 7, the update downloaded extremely quickly (less than 5 seconds) though

    274 seconds for pre-nodo, 442 seconds for nodo with a Focus. Worked like a charm.

    Updating now. Just a note, if you have Zune and are getting an error when running Chevron, go to Task Manager and end any process that has to do with Zune. There is a Zune helper there that’s always running.

    Took a while but worked fine on UK T-Mobile Samsung Omnia 7 for both updates.

    Installation of pre-Nodo worked
    Installation of NoDo worked but crashed after the final reboot. Phone rebooted without an issue but the updater never noticed.
    Unfortunately I wasn’t able to grab the debug info.

    I also noticed that even though I picked the US English (0) from the menu at least one application (Fruit Ninja) appeared to show French language and had no audio. Uninstalling the app and redownloading/installing fixed the issue.

    Curious still what the difference between NoDo 7389 and 7390 is. Seeing how the HTC Arrive “arrived” with 7389 preinstalled, would it be worth seeing if the upgrade works to 7390? Hmm…

      What’s in the update? Focus updated to OS 7.0.7008.0 is there Copy & Paste with that update?

    ok! i have an O2 branded HTC HD7 and the official update is arriving tomorow, so I am confused if I should wait for a few more hours before using this hack, I have heard on other sites that users are experiencing some problems…..damn!! its so confusing

    You gotta love the fact MS probably makes it so easy to make tools/hacks like this. How cool would it be if this works for future updates as well? Though I don’t think MS will go with such a slow rollout for it’s next update.

    At first the updates did not work on my focus. I read a while back that the problem with updating the focus had to do with the micro memory chip. A way to get around this problem was by restoring the phone to factor default. I restored my phone to factory default settings. I was then able to download both updates. Good luck.

      Do you have an external microSD card installed? So after restoring to factory defaults & upgrading, do you have to reinstall / reconfigure your phone?

      So I bit the bullet & did a hard reset. Probably should have written down some of my settings beforehand. Pre-nodo install was successful. Installing NoDo now

    lol ive had my updates for almost 2 weeks, the method that was already out worked just fine. problem is Chevron7 seems to be screwing up for most people after the final update to NoDo, wont even read most peoples phones. seems kinda funny thats happening and the people who built it are putting out this update method after having talks with Microsoft. hmmmm does 1+1 actually equal two now?

    I’ve had an HD7 since November and there have quite literally been 4 times when I’ve needed it.

    it did work
    but i can’t open email,massages, people pub, IE.. and other main progrmas.
    is their a way to fix this?

      Have you found a solution as yet? my phone may as well be a brick at the moment. I cannot get email, make calls, read sms or email. very strange. It’s like 30% of the phone works. Everytime you reboot it asks to continue setup but then it just flashes to the main screen. Much like all the applications just flash and go back to the main screen. Help!

    mine completed fine on the Telstra Mozart but found when clicking on the phone icon it just disapears. I’ve hard reset twice and no joy, I can’t use the phone. The SMS doesn’t work either

    Looks like the updater files are (temporarily?) removed. Didn’t see any mention of if/when they’re coming back. Hopefully soon!
