New Xbox LIVE UI and Bing demo [video]

Microsoft revealed its new Xbox LIVE UI earlier this week.

The Xbox dashboard will be upgraded in the fall to include a new live TV option, Bing search and a brand new user interface. The interface mirrors Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 UI and will include live tiles throughout. Perhaps the biggest improvement is the introduction of Kinect functionality across the dashboard. Kinect users can simply use their voice to search for things on their Xbox or in the cloud. “You say it, Xbox finds it” is the way Microsoft describes its Bing integration.

Craig Davison, Xbox LIVE Director of Marketing, demonstrated the functionality on Wednesday in a video posted to Microsoft’s YouTube channel. “We’re bringing in the intelligence of Bing into the search process” says Davison. The demo shows off Bing Search on Xbox and a peak at the new user interface for the Xbox. Bing on Xbox will initially be available in English in the United States, Canada and United Kingdom. Microsoft says it’s committed to bringing voice search to as many languages as possible in the future.

3 countries? At least its not US only like always. ROW, sorry.

    • GP007

Because not everyone speaks English like they do in the US, UK and most of Canada (though there’s some parts that love their french still).

Adding voice controls with other languages is probably harder than people think.

We just want to use the functionallity, it doesn’t matter if we have to speak english!

We cant keep making excuses for Microssoft. They always make grand announcements then later on quietly you find that there are restrictions like this. Getting people all excited then slyly slipping in the caveats is not nice and they do this regularly. Sure it takes some effort to get other languages working but seriously, French, German and Spanish should be there day one. With all the employees and the money Microsoft makes there really is no excuse.

i am starting to be really pi$$ed off by Microsoft. This Non-US hate… such a bad user experience for those living outside US…

    • http://www.facebook.com/dominic.blakey Dominic Blakey

It will also be availble in the UK and Canada… Not the US only. Plus, it will be eventually rolled out to Worldwide.

MS worldwide is not true worldwide. The Caribbean dont get squat. A pity, the MS following is pretty large.

If you really think they hate everyone outside of the United States then you’re an idiot.

i know they dont hate, but they just dont give the right attention. There are services, that could work, but they simple dont really care… Are you saying that MS approach is not US english language centric?

    • http://www.seriousinternets.com Tim Smith

It’s definitely US and english centric but it should be considering they’re an english speaking company based in the US. I do wish they had more coverage international for the availability of their services but there are many variables at play that we don’t know about that can block them. There will be more features available internationally with Mango though and with time it’ll spread even more. It’s easier said than done but patience is necessary.

yes, i suppose you live in US.

i Just think if its worth to keep with wp7 or jump to Android because Android dont have this problems and get back when wp7 services are worldwide available…

    • J-mac

Totally agree with you… bing is in beta since it’s born and many services are not available outside US. And us customers don’t even care about MS products…

I hope they don’t forget us Non-Kinect users! I pray this new interface is also just as great when using the Controller, as I can see having to press Up and Down a lot more to get to the same place with this new Interface, and as for Bing, well without Kinect that’s useless isn’t it?

    • Anonymous

No, its not. It will take you longer because instead of just speaking it, you will have to type it with the on-screen keyboard or ChatPad.

Pray to god this Interface is easy to use with the Xbox Controller, as most people still use that. And as for Bing, seen as it pretty much requires you to use Kinect, I suppose that’s not an option for us Control users. =/

If you want a wrench with a better grip then make sure you pay for one with a better grip! Stop winning that this requires Kinnect as if it shouldn’t. They are ahead of the game against competitor in feautures and usability. So if you want the extra bells then pay up.

You can use everything shown in the video with the gamepad and on screen keyboard…Kinect just makes it that much easier. I use the ChatPad attachment for my controller…all I need do is go to Bing and type” mission impossible” and ill get the same data as shown in this video.

i think they will have bing search but you will have to type it in on screen or the keyboard enhancement on the controller

I don’t think they will leave the controller area cuz there are 8 million kinects and 55 million xbox’s

Its safe to say they will include controller integration.

LOL at how You have to say “Xbox, Bing, Mission Impossible” not  ”Xbox, Search, Mission Impossible”.
People will not use Bing as a verb no matter how bad Microsoft want them to!

    • Anonymous

OH yes they will… I mean years ago, who would have thought people would be saying google this and google that. If anything Google would be the last word anyone would ever think of using back then. It’s dumb to thing because Bing sounds different that people won’t get use to it. Once people say it repeatedly they will get used to it and use it as a verb no matter how incorrect it might sound.

    • Anonymous

Well when you think about it using Bing should make it more international, they don’t have to have voice command for “search” in every language because Bing is Bing in England, France, China and Norway

There seems to be a big contraint when it comes to Microsoft and localizing products for different markets. For example the Zune HD just arrived in Canada. The problem here is also going to be Bing. Alot of the features that are built into Bing have to be localized for each market and that can take ages.

  • Peeder

Two things I noticed: Zune icon nowhere on the Music tab and the Facebook app has a live tile just like on WP.

  • rennavate

So when is the new dashboard being released?

    • FMH

      This holiday season.
