Nokia Maps now available for Lumia Windows Phone handsets

Nokia Maps is now available for Nokia’s Lumia 800 and 710 Windows Phone devices.

Nokia Maps works in a similar way to Microsoft’s Bing local scout. Users can search for local directions and Nokia provides smart routes for walking, driving and public transport. The app will also surface places to see, eat and highlights of local areas. The navigation works step-by-step, similar to Microsoft’s own mapping equivalent. Users can also review locations and share them across their social networks. Locations can be pinned to the Home Screen for quick access to regular places of interest.

Nokia is expected to make its maps application available more broadly but for now it’s available on the Lumia 800 and 710 devices.

If only I could buy the damn thing. I know they want to build up hype, but they’ve spent a lot of money on marketing something I still can’t buy, and all the pre-order pages are quoting £450 rather than the £399 it’s supposedly going to cost here.

You could also wait for the seccond batch of Nokia WP. I’m expecting the succesor of the Nokia N8

Except no one knows how long that’s going to take. I want to get away from my BlackBerry sooner rather than later.

Is this supposed to come out for non-Nokia devices?

Anyone know if there are any plans to integrate the POIs from Bing local scout to nokia maps?

Any plans to make local scout available in europe (nordic countries)? it’s all empty in copenhagen with allmost no hits at all….. and who is updating it?

Very underwhelming compared to what’s available for the iPhone and
Android. Nokia Maps is just a very basic navigator, even the old one for
Symbian S60v3 had more functions… since then the competition moved up
    and Nokia instead went back.

    -Where is coordinates search?
-Photo navigation? Using a picture’s EXIF data to navigate?
    -Route avoidance?
    -Multiple route choices?
    -Multiple routing points/transit points
    -Can you navigate from Contacts?
-Quick route overview option when navigating
-Does it even have a navigation history?

Very basic and slow. Not impressed.

*** No unlocked Nokia Lumia 800 until 2012 in UK ***

I pre-ordered a Lumia 800 and have just received this from Clove in the UK:

    > We are contacting you this afternoon regarding the release date of the Nokia Lumia 800.
    > Unfortunately we have now heard that the Nokia Lumia 800 UK SIM-free stock will not
    > be available to us until January 2012.

    > This is very frustrating as we were expecting the Lumia to be released much sooner,
    > but will now have to wait until the new year. We are aware that the Lumia will still be
    > launched in the UK this month, but will only be available with a contract from selected stores.

    > We will keep you updated with any further developments regarding the Nokia Lumia 800.
