Nokia promises second Windows Phone update for Lumia 800 battery issues

Nokia revealed this week that it plans to issue two Windows Phone updates to address battery issues on the Lumia 800.

The first update is expected to be made available in early December. The update, that WinRumors reported on last week, will bump the Windows Phone version to 7740. The Nokia 7740 has been made available to some carriers overseas but the vast majority will start to see the update in early December. The update will improve battery life in some circumstances according to the company. Nokia flashed our Lumia 800 review device to the latest firmware last week and we can confirm that the British Airways, eBay, Ministry of Sound, Sky News and TripAdvisor applications are all baked into the ROM. The Windows Phone version is updated to 7.10.7740.16. The initial update will not include Nokia’s Internet Sharing update, due later.

Nokia’s second Windows Phone update will address further battery issues. A Nokia spokesperson revealed the second update in a forum posting earlier this week. “We understand that some people have expressed concerns about battery life on the Nokia Lumia 800,” said Nokia spokesperson Michael Spillett. “A software update in early December will include improvements to power efficiency, while a second update in early January introduces further enhancements to battery life and battery charging.” Both updates will be made available via Microsoft’s Zune software.

The Nokia Lumia 800 went on sale across the UK and some European markets earlier this month. Nokia representatives handed out free chocolate and coffee to potential customers on London’s Oxford Street on launch day. British operator Orange revealed on launch day that the Lumia 800 is the most popular Nokia preorder device to date for the firm. Despite early signs of positive sales, some analysts believe the firm will only ship between 500,000 and 1 million devices by the end of the year.

Whats wrong with the phone just the battery life? How many hours are you getting? Have you tried the Battery Saver option as well?

So you just got the phone today, and you already dislike it? You are a bad consumer, not researching their purchase of something they would dislike so quickly. Maybe the problem is not with the phone, but with you.

      Welcome, latest stupid troll!

Use this device sine day 1…. ABSOLUTELY LUV IT! Best phone I have ever used!

I find the phone nothing special, I think I like my samsung WP7 better… I can not believe I waited all this time for a disappointment.

      Sure shill, whatever.

I find the phone unbelievably awesome. Better than anything we’ve come up with since we first copied the LG Prada.

I liked the phone but this battery problem just is to the point I am taking the phone back.   I though my friends 4s was was sad with its issue, this damn thing is worst.  I feel like a fool for making fun of him buying a iPhone… I guess he now has the last laugh.  :(

The phone could be great, if there wouldn’t be the bad  battery. Duration reminds me on my old iPhone 3G. iPhone 4 lasts much longer. Hope update will make things better.

I have the latest ROM and I get 38 hours in mild use and 16 hours with really heavy use, so I am quite happy!

I wonder if other phones will get a boost from this 7740 update or are we not getting it?  I’ve been away from home and haven’t connected my LG Optimus 7 to check for update so I’m still on default mango 7720.

  • Dalgarven

Good, I think its the one area I have concerns , I have a usb cord at my office, in my car, beside my laptop and at my pc!

  • Drewius

I’m still wary of you saying that those apps are “baked into the ROM”. Can we uninstall them?

    • Alan Sylvain

      Yes 100% :)

  • Luke

The problem is the default setup of the phone is very power-hungry. If you disable features like location services, unnecessary push notifications, find my phone, and minimise the time you have the phone on vibrate, I’ve found the battery lasts much longer.

Well I live is Australia so still waiting for Nokia to release a phone here. My most recent ph contract started in aug 2009 with a free iPhone an it’s been great.

But being a fan of ms windows an office kept promising myself a wp in future. I’ll get a Wp when there out, then when someone releases a good one, then when mango is out, then when Nokia brings one to market, then when Nokia brings it out in Australia, an now after looking at the website mentioned here on winrumors that allows users to comment or vote on features they’d most like to see in future  wp’s (thus realising all the things wp don’t currently do / support) now find myself saying when Apollo is out. An now I have little faith that when Apollo is available in Aus it will be the best phone available.

I’m having the same dilemma with a tablet, have been finding myself wanting one lately, an the w8 tablet experience looks great, but simply don’t want to wait till 2013 when manufactures release their 2nd an 3rd models internationally (usually with a few minor tweaks an improvements on their initial offerings). The sad thing is how far advanced will the iPad an it’s ecosystem be by that point?

I wonder how many other people out there share my frustration??
