Spike in Windows Phone 7 Facebook usage could indicate strong holiday sales

Windows Phone 7

A sharp spike in Windows Phone 7 Facebook application usage appears to indicate that Windows Phone is selling better this holiday season.

The number of monthly active users of Microsoft’s Windows Phone Facebook application has increased by 100,000 in two weeks. The statistics were discovered by the WMPU blog who note that there were 1,000,000 monthly active users on November 11 and this jumped to 1,100,000 by November 25. The statistics record the amount of users who are actively using the Facebook integration on Windows Phone. WMPU speculates that, based on previous calculations, this could reflect sales of over 500,000 new devices.

The jump is likely due to Microsoft’s huge promotion of Windows Phone this holiday season. The software giant has helped launch the Nokia Lumia 800, HTC TITAN and Radar and Samsung’s two new Windows Phone 7.5 devices. Nokia’s advertising in the UK has been massive. The company has taken over websites, newspapers and TV screens in a huge advertising campaign. Nokia appears to be spending Microsoft’s £20 million ($31 million) of funding wisely to promote their new Windows Phone 7.5 devices. Nokia also took over Heathrow airport earlier this month with six giant screens. Nokia is hosting a one-off event which will see deadmau5 perform in front of London’s Millbank Tower later on Monday. Nokia will project 4D images onto the tower and deadmau5 will run through a set of tunes on November 28. The gig will be free for all spectators and Londoners will be able to view the performance from the North and South sides of the River Thames.

    Windows phone FTW

      That’s a fact already.

I hope the numbers are strong!  I’m tempted to upgrade, but i think i’ll wait until next year to replace my focus :)

    • OMG55

I’m with you, I will replace my focus with a Nokia in January!

  • http://twitter.com/Fire_Six Sriram Sarma

    Long overdue… but at last!!!
I hope they get TellMe v1.0 out as soon as possible! Heard enough about Senseless Siri!!!
Wonder when they’d be upgrading the minimum hardware Spec to be a few steps ahead of Fat filled desset and the worm ridden fruit!

    • OMG55

the upgrade will be nice, but how many people use the speech feature of the phone??? I think think this feature is just a talking point and will rarely be used like the FFC; Americans like to brag about available features (Keep up with the Jones’s) and foriegner are more in touch with reality and will admit when a feature really isn’t needed or used.

    • http://twitter.com/Fire_Six Sriram Sarma

True… I dont use TellMe at all unless  I want to show it off to someone! I just wish Microsoft would come up with more out of the box apps.
For example, I am waiting for a proper Timer/Stopwatch app… these are basic apps that should be a part of the Base OS!!!!!

I’m not American and I’m using voice command when calling someone. It’s far faster than searching for a contact within my 550+ contacts.
I also tried voice recognition for messaging but it only works – but not perfect – when I chat with someone in English which is not that often.

    • http://twitter.com/karlcramer Karl Cramer

Once I found out that I could open apps with voice, I do that a lot for things I don’t keep on that start page. “Open Winrumors” for example.

    • Anonymous

I use voice commands all the time in my car. I tell the phone to call a contact and then speak through the Bluetooth speaker. It’s very convenient and since you don’t have to look down at the phone, it is much safer.

    • OMG55

Again while driving is fine, but just sitting in the office or at home, this feature is rarely used.

    • WP7 & Lovin It

I really like the voice feature for text and use it all the time – it’s very accurate and great in the car.  I also use for searches and phone calls.  I mean why type when voice searches work so well?

    • OMG55

I’ve used it while driving, but I can open an app from the start page faster than holding the button to activate the voice feature. Again while driving is understandable (Safety First), but me just sitting in my office and talking to my phone, is just not something I do. Overall, it still a great feature to have an good talking point when promoting WP7.

I’m one of the 100,000. Got a Lumia 800 on three a week or so ago, and it’s absolutely fantastic. Lots of people seem interested in it too, so just maybe Nokia’s advertising blitz is starting to pay off – only time will tell I guess.

The facebook app is a bit of an odd one – I was slightly surprised at the limited functionality in the People hub for Facebook activity – some elements are there but others are missing, hence the need for the standalone app (which is clearly popular). But I thought the whole point of the hub was to integrate social networking sites into one ‘portal’ and obviate the need for lots of separate apps. Am I missing something, or has MS still got some work to do in developing the hubs?

    • Anonymous

what kind of functionality do you find missing in the people hub?

    • http://www.searingarrow.com AlienSix

      A lot actually:
      -The ability to like comments
-Ability to tag people in posts
-Ability to copy comments and repost them

    • Hello

You can like things in the hub, press and hold the comments to copy their text, not sure about tagging since I haven’t done that yet. Maybe your just confused on how to use it…

    • Tripp06

You can actually request these functionality additions in Windows Phone Forums or search and see if someone has already suggested them.  Here’s the link: http://windowsphone.uservoice.com/forums/101801-feature-suggestions

    • http://profiles.google.com/kroenen.karl Aurélien Ramondou

You can already copy comments and tag people (and view tags) in Mango, so the only thing missing for you is to be able to like comments, right ?

    • http://www.twitter.com/wixostrix WixosTrix

@sledge1234:disqus There is also an inconsistancy with posts you can comment and ‘Like’.  For example, if you’re browsing through someone’s pictures, you can’t ‘Like’ them.  The only time you can “Like’ a picture is when it’s in one of the ”What’s New” feeds and it displays the comments counter for that pic.  But you have to tap the counter to go to the screen with the ‘Like’ button, which is a different screen from when you tap the image itself.  You can comment from both screens but can only ‘Like” from the former.

    • OMG55

I don’t know where you are, but I’m in the USA and I can to everything on your list but item 3 from the people hub. But you can do this from your me tile.

    • Guest

You can like and copy comments in the people hub.

    • Guest

      Epic fail, AlienSix.

    • Anonymous

All of you jumped at AlienSix without thinking it through.. And he’s actually right btw.

      “A lot actually:
      -The ability to like comments”
^^^>> You CAN LIKE a status update but NOT an individual comment with-in the status itself. NO, just NO, it’s not possible as of now.

“-Ability to tag people in posts”
^^^>> Again, you CANNOT tag people on posts as well. If I type: “Having a good time hanging out with my friend AlienSix”  It will not let you tag ALienSix so that the comment appears on his profile as well. This is different from tagging someone in a picture.

“-Ability to copy comments and repost them.”
^^^>> I can “COPY” a comment much like how one would Copy and Paste a text, just hold your finger on the actual comment. Mind you, you are simply copying the context and not the actual comment itself (the properties of it, such as Time and date; Poster). I’m not sure where the “repost” comments is referring to, but perhaps someone else can clarify that.

Private messaging being one, possibility to untag would not hurt, some basic management of profile/fanpage etc. :)

    • http://profiles.google.com/kroenen.karl Aurélien Ramondou

“private messaging” is the “messaging” app you already have !
      and you also can untag…

      geez people !
do you know how to use your phone !?

    • http://www.gadgeterija.net Denis Jelec

If it *worked*, I probably wouldn’t complain, wouldn’t you say?

EDIT: I’ve just tried untagging myself *again* – says I am untagged until I reload image(with me on it… -.-), just as it did when I first tried it. So, no, it is not functioning. ;)

So I wasn’t imagining it then – the hub really lacks functionality. The people hub is a great idea, and I can see how it could be made to work, but it’s a bit half-baked right now, which is a shame. MS needs to be a little better at poperly following through on some of their ideas.

That said, I really love the Lumia with WP7 – it’s an outstanding combination that really needs to be experienced to be appreciated. I think I’m possibly lucky in not suffering from battery drain problems either.

    • OMG55

You guys must be nubie’s to WP7 because all of the items Aliensix mentioned can be perform in the people hub already if you have the Mango update installed. Before posting such statements, please study how to manual or go the the wp7 site and view the Tips & Tricks section.

Figuring out what WP7 can do will take some time. I am still finding new features even after having this phone for months. A collegue of mine purchased one some time ago and was having some problems finding some stuff untill I pointed out how to do them.

      (Response to OMG55)

But its like that with every smartphone. It takes time….

I feel the same way as you. The People hub is great for keeping up-to-date etc. but I have yet to figure out how to tag a person in a comment and how to like a comment (not a wallpost, but a comment to the wallpost).

It’s not that big a deal really, since I usually only use it to comment on pictures and stuff like that.

You are lucky, TGR. Or maybe highly skilled.

  • markiz

I’m sure that if facebook app was any good, usage would be even higher.

    • Anonymous

It’s about the Facebook integration on Windows Phone, not the official Facebook app.

    • markiz

My bad. But in the first half of the article they mentioned facebook “application”.

    • Guest

I rarely use the Facebook application since Mango update. I really like to browse all my feeds through the People hub. I only use the FB app to exchange private messages. I also don’t use Twitter application any more.

    • Anonymous

True! But I thought I’d let you know so that no wrong facts are spread ;-D

    • markiz

this is stupid, it only goes 3 replies deep?

Anyway, messages is the reason wp facebook app sucks, it’s very poorly done. Notifications barely work, half of messages are missing, and almost always you have to scroll forever to get to the newest messages. For some reason, it always starts with the oldes ones!

  • Tuxplorer

I think Facebook apps stats could be misleading. One of the biggest selling points of Windows Phone is the People hub and social networking integration. Most WP users, myself included, don’t use the stand alone Facebook app.

    • Guest

The news is not talking about the FB app.

    • Anonymous

Again, it’s not about the Facebook app, but the Facebook integration.
If you follow the link https://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=7933375107&sk=info there is clearly stated that it’s not develop by Facebook.
It really is the People hub ;-)

    • Entegy

By “Facebook app”, he means the Windows Phone app on Facebook. There are two on Facebook, one that represents the Facebook integration and one that represents the official Facebook app on Windows Phone.

In addition, if you are eligible for an upgrade or want to open a new account, you can get the phones for $0.00 from any Microsoft Stores. I bought one this past Black Friday, and it is still going on for some of models and carriers (http://phones.microsoftstore.com/mobile/?referringdomain=microsoft).

Got a Focus Flash for the SO, so +1 over here!

Agreed — this is in reference to the WP7 “People Hub” integration.  I suspect that 98% of all WP7 owners use Facebook integration.  Therefore, does that mean there are only 1.1 million WP7 users world-wide compared to Android’s 170M million?
