Tango video calling app available for Windows Phone 7.5 devices

The first video calling application on Windows Phone is now available for forward facing equipped devices.

The application allows iPhone, Windows Phone, Android and PC users to call each other using webcams and compatible mobile camera hardware. Tango works by detecting contacts with the application based on their email or phone number. The application is a simple way to video call and includes rich cross platform support.

Microsoft supports forward facing cameras in the Camera application of Windows phone 7.5 but does not include a native video calling app at this time. The company is expected to ship a Skype application soon that will likely include support for forward facing cameras.

    Guess this rules the Lumia 800 out for me. Time to get a Focus S then.. question is who else uses Tango?

      I’d like to think that, but that’s what people said about ‘Live Profile’ and I found only 1 contact. I’m willing to bet that if Tango is generally a new app to me, not that many people will have it.. at least on the same scale as Whatsapp

    i used it to call a friend on andriod and iphone, the video lag is terrible sooo slow on fibre optic broadband and even worse on 3g. audio is good thou.  hopefully skype will improve on all of this.

    First gen Windows Phone without front facing camera can use the app too. Works fine on my HTC 7 Trophy.

      That’s not true. I got an HTC HD7 and this app ain’t working on my device. It says “Your phone does not support Tango Video Calls.”.

    I can make a call on my Samsung focus, but video is black. Called my wife’s iPhone and the video was black on my phone but her forward facing camera worked only on her screen. I was thinking this would work for those with only a back camera too. I guess video calling isn’t in my future. That is until I upgrade to focus s.

      I have read several posts talking about trouble with Samsung phones and Tango.
      But many have tried it succsessfully with HTC phones.
      Might be a problem with 1 gen hardware Samsung hardware and the Tango Software.

      Yes, there’s currently a problem on the Focus and Omnia 7.  Tango is working on a fix.

      well i tested it on HTC Surround and it worked perfectly. no front facing camera of course but the video worked just fine bewteen PC WP7.

      so it should be Samsung phones problem. maybe it needs just an update and it will work. you might wait or contact TanGo support.

    It works on my HTC surround just great, I used my rear facing camera. Wp7 is turning into a master piece

      you could use your rear facing camera so people see you, and use a mirror underneath the phone so you can see who you’re talking to :)

    Hmm. I was searching for Tango on Marketplace but I only see 5 applications that have nothing with video calling. Can someone please tell me the right keyword to search for?
