Welcome to WinRumors Metro

By Tom Warren, on 31st Aug 11 11:13 pm with 144 Comments

Over the next few weeks we’re making some changes at WinRumors.

The site will undergo several tweaks to bring it into line with Microsoft’s Metro style guidelines. The first of those changes is the launch of a tablet version of WinRumors. Similar to Microsoft’s Windows 8 Start Screen, WinRumors Tablet features tiles of news and a Metro look and feel. The tablet version supports Apple iPad, Android and webOS devices. Microsoft is planning to unveil their Windows 8 tablet offering fully in a couple of weeks and we’ll update the site accordingly to support Windows 8 at Developer Preview launch.

WinRumors Metro

So what else is on the way you ask? You’ll have to wait and see but rest assured the improvements launched today will filter over to the “classic” version of WinRumors in a similar way. It has been nearly a year since I launched WinRumors and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my loyal and growing readership for all the support, comments and feedback that you supply on a daily basis. I look forward to the next year ahead as Microsoft ushers in a unified user experience across its core products and the next generation of Windows. I hope to hear from you all in the comments section and the contact form.

Thank you

Tom

Many Thanks to Tim Kimberl (@timan25) for working hard on the Metro theme. He’s a talented and respected designer and a great friend.

Wow.. That’s a really nice look.  Love it!

Is there a way to access this from a desktop and try it out?

    • http://www.winrumors.com Tom W

Not at the moment but that’s something I’m considering enabling.

    • Cristobal

I have a TabletPC running Win7.  Is there any technical reason why it does not work here?

    • Moldysquirrel

Yah, ur tablet is identified as a personal computer and not a mobile device. Some browsers support changing it so it appears as a tablet, if u know how to u can use a plugin or such.

You should add a URL that works in IE :-)

Would love to see a switch button somewhere, would love to see this on a desktop.

You can try changing your user agent. (works best in webkit browsers)

    • Apollo

So it uses non-standard code? Otherwise it would also work automatically on Win7 tablet with Fennec, or Opera and Firefox on Android, and no tweaking would be needed for IE on Win8 tablet.

Tom, just want to let you know that I love this site for the lack of hyperbolic editorials and click baits that are so common elsewhere.  Wow, didn’t know this site is only one year old.

    • Anonymous

Emphasis on the click bait. Mostly common on a certain brand’s rumor sites along with FUD jabs towards everything non-”certain brand”.

    • Anonymous

That’s to Tom’s credit. The commenters are a different story.

  • BigChiefSmokem

Tom bringing in the big bucks now with all this troll traffic driving up ad impressions ;-)

    Wow ! very Nice ;)

  • MJP

Very nice! Can’t wait to get a W8 tablet when they’re released! I also like the comment emoticons in the corners of each article, that’s a nice WP7 touch!

Loving the Metro UI sexiness, makes browsing WinRumors on my tablet a lot more enjoyable. The best Windows site just got even better! Great job Timan.

Why does a website have to look like a start screen of an operating system? Seriously. It doesn’t work well as can be seen on the screen shot: not one single headline can be read.

Form should follow function and Metro is a design “language” but that doesn’t mean that everybody has to say the exact same thing.

    • http://www.winrumors.com Tom W

Appreciate the feedback. This is only for tablet devices and is designed so that the first line will give an idea of the story in the tile.

    • Anonymous

Why only tablet devices? Why not make a switch button on the site so we can choose the layout on the desktop front too.

    • Aaron

I think this will work great on tablets.  Thanks Tom!

    • Guest

Tom, love the new look and the Metro UI feel to it. Also, a BIG PLUS to the options to view comments “New First” “Popular Now”‘ ect.

    • JimmyFal

Tom I am having a real problem with the lack of dates or at least times on the posts on the new screen, and the inability to see the entire headline. I think it detracts. I will try to get used to it, but I really miss being able to see the entire headline. Wasn’t sure where to post feedback.  Otherwise nice look, would also like to see some picture backgrounds in place of solid colors. Maybe a feedback button somewhere so I don’t have to complain in front of the group here! JF

The site look great! Trying it on Maxthon/Win7 with iPad’s UA. Only one thing I don’t like, the picture of Simon Witt in the home page does not look good stretched.

Yea, this is mostly cause the post was done before the theme. So older entries will have stretched tiles.

can´t you give us the option to see it on our desktops, winrumors.com/metro ????

  • http://profiles.google.com/elmsoftware John Lueders

    The font comes up dithered in Chrome.  I see that you have the font-family as ‘Segoe WP’ then ‘Segoe UI’…I have Segoe UI and it should look good but it still comes up looking off.  Look into adding perhaps, html{-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased;}

Site looks great though…keep up the great work.

Also, the comment font size looks small.

  • Danygandhi

Cannot scroll in homepage both in landscape and portrait on ipad2 . Is that how it is supposed to be or am I missing something.

    • http://www.winrumors.com Tom W

Yes it’s fixed to just the 6 tiles at the moment, may look into having it scroll sideways for more.

    • Jeremy

Please, I keep trying to swipe for more stories. Love the look though!

Metro is changing the world. Elegance.

  • Dlf_oki_2011

Agree with several others, would really like this for desktop, as it would give a smidgen of the Win8 feeling with mouse/keyboard.

  • Erik Lenaerts

Hey, thanks, looks gr8 so far. Every morning on my way to work I read your blog to keep myself up to date.

Was wondering if you ever consider to add non consumer products like microsoft’s server software families. As enterprise architect i would be very much interested in that. I haven’t found a good consolidated spot on the web for that. However, I’m glad to be able to read winrumors already :)

Keep up the work, you’re doing a fantastic job ! :)

    Tom,

I discovered this site about 6 months ago and now read it daily. I find the news and insights both from you and from the commenters to be something to look forward to. It’s in fact us who should say:

Thank you Tom for giving us our daily windows fix :)

    • Sergio Iacobucci

Would like to second this. It is such a great site and I read it daily. Thanks for all the news, keep up the good work.

  • http://doctorwhofan98.wordpress.com/ doctorwhofan98

Looks great on the iPad! Can you please put it as the desktop interface? By the way, how do we view past posts? There’s no search button…

  • Lancasoy

This site rocks. I always see a bunch of Apple dedicated blogs but never any real good MS blogs. I find the official MS blogs clunky and unreadable (any other good windows or microsoft blog site suggestions?). Winrumors is a darling, Thanks Tom!

  • wp7gg

i bet this tablet will be fucking released in 2020. by that time, apple products will be something like an invisible spaceship hovering across steve ballmer’s ass!

we’re in the post apple world. android rules the roost with only microsoft to challenge it. apple is done.

Thing looks nice but this is one of my worries about the metro UI when it finnally rolled out with win8..its gonna get used by any and everybody that it will loose its appeal.

Looks nice. But not sure the preview is worth chopping off the title. I’d prefer to just see the full title and no preview if that’s the required tradeoff for screen real estate. See example here:

IT’S AWESOMEE!!!  I almost fell out of my skin when I saw it lol

  • John

Looks nice but….. It just does not work.

I am reading this on my iPad but I can’t see the headlines. Only the first few words of each.
I can only see the latest ten articles. No way to scroll on to older articles.
I can not search for anything.
I can not op out and ask for the full site. (Good thing I have UA Faker tohelpme out)

This is defenitely Form Over Function.

    • Anonymous

I’m viewing it on my IPad in Safari and Im not having those issues. To view older articles I just tap the arrow next to the articles to the right of the page. I do notice articles are missing at the bottom when Im viewing using the Bing App.

    • John

      You’r right – I swear that arrow wasen’t there yesterday :-)
And a search box has been added. Very nice.

Now it only needs finetuning as to shortening titles and fixing image aspect ratios.

  • Anonymous

Omg this site on my IPad is absolutely gorgeous!!!!! If this is a taste of what Windows 8 tabs will look like my IPad will be kicked to the curb lol!!

  • Anonymous

Remember, Microsoft has tablets today (e.g. TM2, T101MT, XT2, X61, X201, etc). I hope you can make the site compatible with those as well.

  • Dragongard

Can i have it for my normal pc?
