Microsoft’s early Milestone 1 build of Windows 8 leaked only a week ago and hackers have been hard at work to unlock hidden features.

Hackers over at MyDigitalLife have enabled the following features using registry keys:

New Windows 8 webcam

Windows 8 Webcam

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\GRE_Initialize\
create a DWORD value named “RemoteFontBootCacheFlags”, set its value to 0x100f (4111)

New Windows 8 Modern Reader

Windows 8 Modern Reader

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Applets\Paint\Capabilities
create a string value named “CLSID”, set its value to “{D3E34B21-9D75-101A-8C3D-00AA001A1652}” , then run glcnd.exe.

New Windows 8 Ribbon UI

Windows 8 Ribbon UI

Create the following key in registry: HKEY_CLASS_ROOT\CLSID\{4F12FF5D-D319-4A79-8380-9CC80384DC08}

Create a string value under the key called “AppID”, set its value to “{9198DA45-C7D5-4EFF-A726-78FC547DFF53}”

Kill explorer.exe and restart and the Ribbon UI will be enabled.

If we don’t have leaks, how do we use these?…

There is a leak of an early M1 build.

Somebody doesn’t keep up to date. Jeez :)

I hate the Ribbon UI, i love the Metro UI

  • John Makris

Things work just as they should.Perfect!!!:D

Some people who comment here are just so stupid! “I hate the Ribbon UI, i love the Metro UI” – that the heck! Is ribbon an UI?? Aero is an UI, Metro is an UI!

And btw, the ribbon looks cool…

    • Anonymous

I’d say it’s ui that’s a subset of another ui since ui = user interface

    • James

Actually, it’s you that is the stupid one. The ribbon is a user interface, in that you use it to perform functions. Hence, it’s a UI.

I love the ribbon. I hate the ribbon place holder icons.
I love metro. Metro is not an os. Metro is a codename for the theme based elements.
I love aero. Aero is not an os.

What’s the “modern reader”? From an uneducated first glance it looks like a let’s-get-rid-of-Adobe move.

      Just about right

    • Anonymous

Seems that way and thank heavens for it too. Windows is the last OS that’s still missing a native PDF viewer (OS X having preview and Linux-based DEs having either Eye of GNOME, among others)

    Metro UI…NO for Ribbon UI…vote..for Metro UI…

Metro is a second UI aimed for tablets.. Ribbon will be apart of the Wind UI.. the common UI.. I love them both equally.. But I definitely don’t want to see Metro as my full desktop UI..
