Windows 8: User account roaming settings over Windows Live Cloud revealed

Microsoft’s Windows roaming Cloud settings have been revealed.

The software giant was rumored to be including cloud syncing in Windows 8 when a number of confidential slides leaked last year. Forum users at MyDigitalLife uncovered a control panel item for “Roaming Options” under User Accounts. The Roam Options allow users to roam the following items:

  • Desktop Wallpaper
  • Aero Glass Color
  • Ease of access control panel
  • Magnifier
  • On screen keyboard
  • Narrator
  • Speech recognition settings
  • Language profile
  • Text prediction preferences
  • IME dictionary
  • Application settings and search history
  • Windows Taskbar settings
  • Windows Explorer settings
  • Windows Search settings
  • Windows Mouse settings
  • Wireless network profiles
  • Saved website credentials

The settings appear to sync to Microsoft’s Windows Live Cloud network when users link their Windows Live profile to a Windows 8 account. Microsoft has also included two roaming options to enable roaming on paid and low bandwidth networks. Long Zheng points out that Windows 8 appears to have the ability to distinguish between networks that charge for data, such as 3G networks, and those that have limited bandwidth.

So that means, if I have a Windows 8 tablet, changes to settings made, will roam to my Windows 8 desktop.
    Nice.

And all these little leaks are starting to kill the anticipation for me. I’m sure later this week we might see another reveal. Hmmm I call zune media being default or xbox live integration

I’m wondering if Microsoft will implement the History Vault to have similar options for home users to easily ‘roam’ locally between devices in their home network.

The implementation of the dream that was originally started by the Live Framework and Live Mesh will be realized thanks to Windows 8 and the new Appx model.

This is possibly the greatest thing any Windows power-user could want. Paul Thurrott continually mentioned that his dream for Windows 8 would be to sign into using his Live ID and it would log him in with all his customisation settings, files and programs from the cloud. I do hope we could see this dream come true. :-)
