Windows Phone 7.5 Internet tethering feature only available on new devices…for now

Microsoft released Windows Phone 7.5 to the world on Tuesday but the company also unveiled users options for Internet tethering with the latest update.

Windows Phone 7.5 includes the ability for end users to share their Internet connection with up to 5 devices at the same time. Microsoft revealed on Tuesday that only new Windows Phone 7.5 devices will be able to take advantage of the feature due to some hardware differences. “This feature will only be available on new Windows Phones that have radios capable of broadcasting a connection,” said Microsoft’s Ben Rudolph in a blog post on Tuesday.

The tethering feature is also controlled by mobile operators. If a mobile operator chooses to enable the feature then users will see an “Internet Sharing” option under the main settings of Windows Phone 7.5. The feature was originally discovered during the beta phase of Windows Phone 7.5 “Mango” but Microsoft officially recognized the feature on Tuesday.

Some AT&T Samsung Focus users were able to enable the Internet Sharing option using copies of Windows Phone 7.5 build 7720.68. It’s not immediately clear whether this is still possible with the final operator updates of Windows Phone 7.5 being pushed to devices on Tuesday.

Update: It appears existing devices may get tethering support if device manufacturers and operators decide to update the Wi-Fi drivers on current devices. Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore revealed that Internet Sharing requires a new Wi-Fi driver to be provided for existing handsets. “I suspect most will do this, but it will take time,” he said in a Twitter message that has subsequently been deleted. Miscc.net was able to capture his remarks.

Sad. I was looking forward to this. :(
I guess that’s another reason to upgrade phones once I can.

If you are a focus owner, there was a work around the allowed you to enable the tethering feature on the device when it came out last year. I believe it is more related to the device manufacturer having the feature built in to its specifications……Samsung does!!!!

That was wired tethering, I am assuming the Wi-Fi tethering works a little differently.

My LG Optimus 7(unlocked) have no tethering with La Poste Mobile (SFR France) operator =’(

GREAT (assuming AT&T turns this on)!  Now return to us our ability to direct sync (no cloud) and I’m a pretty darn happy camper!!!!

If this is the case I am throwing my HTC Mozart away and will probably never use Windows Mobile again.  How stupid can they be?  The phones can be used to tether.  The hack proved that.  Why are they blocking this?  Looks like I go get and iPhone.

Stupid, stupid decsion Microsoft.  You lost me and you lost someone who used to recommend your product.

You do see the part where they say it’s not Microsoft’s decision, right? That it’s up to the manufacturers? Do you see that part? Right there?

    • Stephen

You mean it was the manufacturers decision to not include cabled tethering?  I didn’t read that anywhere.

If XDA can make cabled tethering work then Microsoft should be able to.

Put the blame where it sits.  NOT manufacturers decision – MICROSOFT’S.

AND Microsoft was claiming that they were making sure all the hardware was up to scratch.  Surely they thought about tethering in the design phase before they accepted the hardware specs from the manufacturers?  So either they were STUPID and chose not to think about it at that point or were STUPID and accepted specs that wouldn’t do the job.

      Their product, their STUPIDITY.

PEOPLE – DON’T BUY A WINDOWS MOBILE PHONE.  IT IS YEARS OLD TECHNOLOGY.

The technology used to run the phones is very low tech. Correct. But Even dual core Androids can barely handle half the shit it does. Also, you are are wrong, it’s not the manufacturer that doesn’t allow features to unlock, it’s the carrier. Meaning Sprint, At&t, Verizon, etc. The OS has all of these items built in, it’s up to the carrier to unlock them.

    • Hates_Idiots

You’re a retard, obviously can’t read, tethering is on the phone but it’s down to the carrier, i.e. your mobile service provider, to decide whether or not tethering is enabled.  Should really read shit before go throwing CAPS around whilly nilly.

      JACKASS.

Did you have to pay the £60 sdk deployment fee?

  • SmartGuy

See! This is from HTC Support:

“We have just confirmed that the update of Mango doesn’t have internet tethering. Only HTC Radar with Windows7.5 mango has this function.”

I have been mislead to purchase the Mozart.
