Windows Phone 7.5 launching on September 1?

Windows Phone Mango

Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7.5 operating system will launch on September 1, according to reports.

Commonly referred to as Windows Phone Mango, its codename, Windows Phone 7.5 was finalized by the software giant in late July. UK site Pocket-Lint claims, through “trusted sources”, that Microsoft is planning to launch the Windows Phone 7.5 update on September 1. “The date we now understand to be chosen is important because it ties in with IFA, Europe’s largest consumer electronics show in Berlin, and means that companies like Samsung, Acer, ZTE and LG will be able to show off new devices with Mango installed,” said Pocket-Lint on Thursday.

WinRumors understands that Microsoft will announce several Windows Phone 7.5 devices on September 1 but that the update for existing devices will not be made available immediately. Microsoft is understood to be preparing a rolling update instead of a single “big bang” approach. Windows Phone developers will be able to submit 7.5 applications on August 22 and the software maker will release the Windows Phone Mango RC development tools on that day too. Microsoft will likely wait until its development tools are fully baked and OEMs/carriers sign off on Mango before pushing the update to existing devices.

Microsoft’s Nokia partnership will likely be strengthened by the launch of its first Windows Phone 7.5 device in October. Nokia is understood to be planning a launch party event for its Windows Phone device at Nokia World on October 26. The majority of new Windows Phone 7.5 devices will be made available in time for the important holiday season.

I wonder how long it will take for Mango to be pushed to existing devices then. Late September maybe?

    • GP007

Depends on the carrier probably.    I’m sure any unlocked/unbranded devices will get it relativly quick.

Most people will probably get it by the end of September. Those of us on AT&T will probably get it in early November…

And it will only work on half of the Samsung Focus devices….

They will pump out bad firmware just in time for the warranty to expire.

Nice try, more like April 2012.  The tools at AT&T will put no effort into certifying it for existing phones, as they’ll want to sell new ones.  They’ll dangle the new phones in front of existing customers as the only way to get Mango for months.  Yes, I am cynical, and yes AT&T is fully capable of these shenanigans.

Giving all updates in big bang has one advantage – there won’t be weeks (or even months) when some people would not be able to download your application you published and some could download it..

    • Aaron

I would like to agree because that is how I thought updates would be handled before they released WP7.  But since companies like Samsung create bad firmware, MS doesn’t want to take the risk with a big bang.

    Ugh.  Hate fruit.  Want Mango.

  • Gtolan

Cant wait! Mango looks totally cool…

  • Renzo

Where is the guy who posted “SAMSUNG Mangooooooooooooooooooooooooh!!” on the RTM article?

    That was a good post.

if i have an unlocked device (but was at one point att) does that mean i can get the earlier update?

What I still do not get is why is mango good enough for new devices immediately but still being delayed by carriers when it is the same OS? Don’t tell me its due to some firmware update when the update tool provided by MS can pull those formware and update them first before it updates the WP OS (this was used to update Samsung Focus). Neither is it because of carrier apps that they can put on the marketplace anwyay and do not need to hold onto the OS for that. This is why it is not a good idea to involve carriers in any update or OS distribution, its just a huge bottleneck.

This is the same argument I made for 7392, which has been held up by AT&T for months for most of their devices, and is still being delayed for the REV 1.3 Samsung Focus (speculated for simultaneous release with Mango). There’s no reason for the carriers to care about an update that adds no features or improvements. There is no change to the phone’s main firmware or radio firmware. It is a security fix by means of marking an SSL certificate invalid, nothing more. So, if anything, they should be more concerned about getting the fix out to protect their customers. I still maintain that the carriers have nothing to gain by holding back updates. Until at least November 2013, all of their Windows Phone customers will be under contract. So it’s not as if they are encouraging those customers to upgrade to new hardware by delaying the software updates. The new hardware isn’t even out yet.

Basically what a year ago we bought as “uniform, timely, direct updates from Microsoft”, turns out to be just a guarantee you’ll get every update, sometimes, eventually, without no time limit, when the carriers see fit.

I have AT&T.  I unbranded my Focus (to get NoDo “early”) and it stayed unbranded after the NoDo update.  I recieved 7392 one day after it officially started rolling out to devices.  I hope the same happens with Mango.

My Windows Phone 7 is coming to me on Monday! Can’t wait! Making the switch from iPhone and most of my friends have thought I’ve lost my mind.

I’ve convinced several iPhone users to switch. They have all been happy with WP7.

    • Doctor U

My friends and family are just blown away since I worked for Apple.

    • Anonymous

Don’t let Apple Ops catch you with that lol – btw that rocks!

    • Anonymous

Yeah but it won’t have Mango on it.

    • Joe05

September 1…Our luck Apple will reveal iPhone 5 on the same day and kill any interest in anything WP7 related.

  • Morgan

So for the AT&T Samsung Focus… I guess we can expect the update sometime in Feb or 2012? Fortunately I will not have to wait that long as I will be jumping to the flagship Nokia device whatever that may be called. I cannot wait for this update. It’s going to be awesome. :)

    • Anonymous

I’ve read that NOKIA won’t release a flagship device until spring…

  • Jimmyk

Any of these phones coming to Verizon this year?

    • http://twitter.com/JLancaster3 J Lancaster

yes, the trophy will get mango update.  I’m sure that nokia would be on both gsm and cdma networks if they want to live.

    • Anonymous

No confirmation yet on the devices or what carriers they will be available on respectively.  Those announcements are still forthcoming.

  • http://twitter.com/JLancaster3 J Lancaster

It was my understanding that the carriers could hold on one of the updates per cycle.  So they held on to Nodo until testing was completed.  I’m pretty sure, that there won’t be anymore testing with this update.  But I’m sure At&t needs to put their code into the OS for handling how teathering and what not will be handled.

    • Andy

I think they just can SKIP an update at a time, then deliver it with the next. Nowhere is said how long they can delay it

God I hate samsung, i know this update is going to be a pain for focus users. I’ll pay $400 + to have a Nokia now and not in another year. Samsung can go to hell with its beautiful super AMOLED (the only reason i got it).

  • SnowLoepard

BTW, I am running Mango RTM build (dev version) on Samsung focus and there is no problem what so ever. So If AT&T or Samsung gi ve testing as a reason, you know that it is BS.

  • http://twitter.com/kid_jenius Daniel Paulino

i’ve noticed that a lot of people are concerned that samsung focus phones won’t receive the update fast enough based on the experience with the NoDo update. was this only in the US or worldwide? because I think i got my NoDo soon after it was released?

    btw im in Canada

  • Anonymous

I Can’t wait for that, hopefully T-Mobile will carry the nokias so I can sell my sensation at a good price before it devalues even more and get me a Nokia instead, though I’m hopping that mango supports WiFi hot spot like android does because if I purchase a mango I’m gonna have to buy an android tablet for the simple reason that I have to have my Square app for my business.

  • Andy

Wouldn’t hold my breath. My bet is that if most users have mango by Christmas, it will be a miracle. What has been stated is probably just an announcement. It took five months for a minor update to reach all phones, from the announcement

Making a parallel with a simple tiny update like nodo, which failed miserably (and they never understood that), I’m expecting mango on my phone in February

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rickard-Godzkilla/510395754 Rickard Godzkilla

Hopefully there will be a way to just install it to the device without waiting for an over the air update.  Then again aren’t updates done through the Zune software?

    I just want it ASAP
