Windows Phone Mango now available for HTC HD2 owners

Windows Phone Mango has been successfully ported over to the HTC HD2.

A ROM based on the beta version of Windows Phone Mango has been made available to HTC HD2 owners unofficially. HD2 users were also able to load Windows Phone 7 NoDo onto their devices after a group of users at XDA-developers managed to create a ROM to flash onto devices. HD2 owners have previously had to stick with Windows Mobile 6.5 or try one of the many freely available Android builds that have been ported to the hardware. Microsoft refused to provide an official ROM as the device did not meet strict button requirements for Windows Phone 7.

HTC HD2 owners can now load Mango onto their device by following these simple steps:

  1. Follow the instructions to download and install magdlr if you haven’t done so already
  2. Download the Mango files from XDA
  3. Put your HD2 into USB Flasher mode when prompted on HD2 boot up
  4. Run DWI.exe from PC with HD2 connected

The team at Pocketnow.com has created a great video demonstration of Mango on the HTC HD2, check it out below.

You can put the Mango Betas on the Samsung Focus

      Stupid question here, but;
I will be getting a HD7 tomorrow and I’m wondering if it will be possible
for me to put the mango beta on that?

    • Me

      YES!

    • Luke

Awesome. I will most likely do that later today then.
      Thanks.

Butter Smooth. This is WP7. Even on Last-Gen Devices.

It’s crazy that the HD2 works so well on WP7. Just shows how good the device was/is.

The hardware specs of the hd2 and hd7 are near identical. Same processor and all. The t-mobile hd2 has more rom storage vs. the hd7 but other than that, its pretty much the same exact phone with less buttons. (Which is nothing but a slap in the face to hd2 owners. Release the same phone minus 2 buttons when the hd2 would run it fine.)

Question guys, what would be the equivalent of the search button on that device?

If I remember rightly, it was the home button

When I read the title, I was like “WHAT! I just got rid of my HD2 and then they release WP7 for it!”

Anyways, there is probably a chance of Windows Live bans for people using unofficial software.

I don’t think they ever banned anybody for using unauthorised software. When you install windows phone 7 on the HD2, it requires an activation key from microsoft to get zune and market access. I just called up microsoft and told them i need an activation key for windows phone 7, to use on my hd2 and they didn’t even hesitate. Gave it right to me. Gave them my imei and everything. Im thinking they won’t to anything in order to get more people in the windows marketplace, buying apps. I know i bought a few.

Same, I just rang up and asked for a activation code. Told them I had a HD2 and they gave me the code. I also bought some XBL games off the marketplace, but then I was reading about on XDA and people were getting worried of Windows Live bans. So I just reflashed to android because I dont want to risk my Xbox LIVE account that has 80k gamerscore on it :)

I heard the guy say receive the update over the air? Is this true mango will be pretty big do be done over the air.

    • Me

No. It’s actually a pretty long process to install. You need to upgrade Zune. And then go through 2 updates.

    • Entegy

Pretty sure that that’s only for the beta and the full release will be one update from 7392.

I have mine running Android 2.2. My son uses it to make Skype calls, so unfortunately I can’t touch it. Please let us know if everything works on it (including Marketplace)

Microsoft recently bought Skype, so I’m guessing that you’ll see Skype on WP7 within the next month or so (if it’s not there already).

What about the HTC Touch HD??

  • DEuX

Will your phone be fully functional?  I mean email, phone usage, etc?

    • http://openid-provider.appspot.com/dan@skaboy.net skaboy

The previous versions of windows phone 7 on the hd2 had full functionality. email, phone, market, mms, sms, everything. No different than the hd7. (A bit more tweaked actually) so i would imagine this wouldn’t be that much different.

My testing of the WP7 RTM was in the HD2. That is the smartphone i still have. Looks like i will not have to update phone for a while.
