Windows Phone Mango overview: Bing Vision and Audio [video]

In part five of our Windows Phone Mango overview series we take an in-depth look at the new Bing Vision and Audio features for Mango users.

Bing Audio and Vision are without a doubt a sign of things to come for Windows Phone Mango and Apollo (Windows Phone 8). Bing Audio and Vision allow users to simply scan every day items such as books, CDs or DVDs and have Bing confirm the product, online pricing and reviews. The Bing Vision piece will even allow you to scan product barcodes to locate groceries and other items online. Although many of the features are available in rival platforms and separate applications, Microsoft’s tight integration into the core of the operating system means that the features will be surfaced to every Windows Phone user. Microsoft’s final piece of Bing Vision is the translation and OCR features. Bing Vision can read a bunch of text from a book and then convert it into several different languages in an augmented reality style.

Microsoft has also built in Bing Audio. Similar to Shazam, the service will allow you to locate music that is playing in the background or on the radio. Microsoft takes this one step further though. Through its deep Zune integration, Windows Phone Mango users can simply search for background music and then have it streamed to the device via Zune pass, within seconds. Check-out the video below to see how this works.

I would say “first” but that is just immature.

    • Arturo Ryes

He was just listening to Justin Bieber, THAT is immature! (JK)

  • Vincent Haakmat

Now, if they could only add the build-in translate to voice messages, like I saw in the AT&T commercial. The guy was speaking into his phone, and the phone spoke it back into a different language. Now that would be cool and hopefully we don’t have to wait for WP8 for that.

  • Callumpy

I just puked to the sound of Justin Bieber.

    • Tom W

haha that’s precisely the reason I used Bieber :)

  • Pary

    justin bieber? really?

Was glad to see Bing Music show up for us Canadians in the latest Mango refresh. Was then quickly disappointed to see that even after identifying the song, we cannot search for it in the marketplace.

    Oh Canada :(

I am so bummed about this too. MS keeps promising expanded services, but even here in Canada we are left hanging. Very frustrating and sales inhibiting.

    • Candid Calum

It might change come Mango’s release :)

Had you tested those out before hand or is it really that fast?

    • Tom W

Bing Vision doesn’t work on my Omnia 7, apart from scanning tags. Do we have to wait for GA for this to be available in the UK?

  • Kadmus11

So we will FINALLY get proper audio input in the UK for bing? Can’t wait!!!

Don’t blame the technology if you’re playing Bieber in the background!

  • Kieran Kelly

Tom are all these features like voice to text avaible in the UK?

    • Tom W

Not all of the features are available in the UK unfortunately.

I like how the the phone locates the barcodes on its own. Most apps you have to position the barcode between guide lines. What was that geometric image he scanned?

I just paid $22.87 for an iPad2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $675 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from,

    Hi Tom

Can Toast Messages be disabled so that the 1st line of an incoming SMS or IM does not automatically appear at the top of the screen when I dont want it to ?

What’s that far left button, and did I see a button that scans text like OCR?
