Windows Phone “Tango” to follow Mango release?

Microsoft may be preparing Windows Phone codename “Tango” according to reports.

Two Chinese sites are both reporting that Microsoft is preparing Windows Phone Tango to succeed the Mango update due later this year. Mango is rumored to be named Windows Phone 7.1 whilst Tango could be Windows Phone 7.5. DigiTimes reports that Taiwan-based ODM maker Compal Communications has signed a deal with Microsoft to licence the use of Windows Phone Mango and Tango. The report is also backed by a separate story from Chinatimes that suggests Tango will follow Mango.

Microsoft has codenamed Windows Phone 8 as “Apollo”, scheduled for release in late 2012. If the Chinese reports are accurate then this would place an interim update between the two, perhaps mid-way through 2012. The Tango codename is the first time such a name has been made public. Microsoft is currently preparing to finalise its Windows Phone Mango update.

Microsoft unveiled a number of new Windows Phone Mango features at a VIP event in May. Mango will include over 500 new features ranging from multitasking through to some major Bing search improvements. For more information on Mango check-out our mango section.

I don’t care if it is Tango or salsa or whatever as long as I am getting the best.

Apollo 8 was a significant milestone in the Apollo Program as it was the first human spaceflight to leave Earth orbit. (They orbited the moon without landing, as the Lunar Module wasn’t ready yet.)

Ah, brilliant insight!! Thank you, thank you!

That actually makes a lot of sense for MS to name WP8 that way, as it will be the first time the same code will be used accross all their platforms. Very interesting.

Now if they can just time it to roll out at Christmas.  Apollo 8 was in orbit around the Moon during Christmas 1968.  Well, the journey back began on 12/25 but you get the idea. :)

I thought Mango was 7.5, so Tango could be a small update like NoDo, more like 7.5.1 etc.

    • Anonymous

Nah Tango will be 7.7.7 :)

    • Anonymous

Mango is indeed 7.5. Engadget got a developer device from Microsoft running the latest dev build of Mango, and it shows 7.5

Isn’t Mango known as 7.1 internally at Microsoft?

    • Adam Robinson

It’s both. Some parts say 7.1 and some parts 7.5. Either is correct. 7.5 will most likely be used for the final build.

I don’t understand why any of this is such an issue lol.  If it is 7.1 then we should be able to deduce that the version number does not symbolize the size and scope of the update.  On the other hand, if it is 7.5 then it would be a significant foreshadow of events to come (as in that after two updates we would have reached the 7.5 mark, then maybe the fourth update will be WP8, OR since we reached a year to get to 7.5 then maybe WP8 will come out just another year later).

I guess it is originally 7.5, and Apollo is the next. but later MS decided to insert another interim version between Mango and Apollo, so Mango became 7.1 in the last minute.

Is my li’l Optimus 7 really going to run proper Windows 8 eventually?

    • Aaron

I’m conflicted on this, because I do hope the current generation of WP7 hardware will be upgradeable, but I also hope that WP8 comes with higher spec requirements.  Not that I think WP8 should require more resources for itself, like Vista, but it would be nice for game developers to target quad core and what not.  So if the future of the platform requires leaving the current gen hardware behind, then I wont mind too much.  Especially since i’ll be close to renewing my 2 year contract anyways :)

    • Morgan Wisbey

I’m sure all current models will upgrade and run the new versions. I’m just not sure you would want to. My experience with the iPhone is there was always something you were missing out on if you didnt upgrade to the latest hardware. Speed features etc… there was always something. We already know the new software is going to support gyroscope and front camera. As long as you aren’t with Verizon, most other service providers will allow you to upgrade to the latest hardware after a year. Verizon has never bent on this before the two year contract expired. AT&T did this with the iPhone as long as you renewed another 2 year agreement. What I did with every iPhone release is sell my phone and use those proceeds to help purchase my next phone at a discount. That way you always have the latest hardware platform with the newest software.

I’d like to see more customized hardware support like 3D screens, 3D cameras, large screens, dual screens, etc.  I know Microsoft want’s to keep things from getting fragmented, but we also want to see some unique hardware coupled with a unique OS….

Speaking of which there is a rumor on pocketnow that Mango will support a front facing cameras:

    • Aaron

I second this!  I like the WP OEM model relationship, but thus far the only unique hardware choices have been slide-out keyboard and screen sizes.  I might not personally want 3D or dual screen, but I would love to see this type of variety in the market.  I think they could allow it in a controlled manner and keep it from getting too fragmented unlike Android.
