WinRumors nominated as “Best new blog of the year” by ComputerWeekly

By Tom Warren, on 22nd Nov 11 11:16 pm with 68 Comments

I’m pleased to report that WinRumors has been shortlisted for the “Best new blog of the year” award.

The award is part of ComputerWeekly’s Social Media 2011 awards, due to take place in London next week. If you have a few minutes to spare then we’d really appreciate it if you took the time to vote for us over at the ComputerWeekly voting page here. Voting ends on November 25 and the winner will be announced on November 29.

As you know the site has been running for just over a year now and it has been an eventful one. A tablet version of WinRumors, named Metro, saw its public outing on August 31 and a Metro desktop version launched shortly afterward. We have also done a lot of work to address the load time of WinRumors, putting content at the forefront of the experience. There’s also a WinRumors Windows Phone 7 app and a mobile web version for all your browsing needs.

The loyal readership and growth of the site continues to surprise me on a daily basis. I’m genuinely thankful for your support and comments on the site. If you have any questions, comments or feedback you can always drop me a line personally via the contact us form.

Thank you,

ComputerWeekly - Vote now!

Tom, you have created a first-class website devoted to Microsoft news and information. I visit WinRumors several times every day – even on the weekends – just to keep current on Windows Phone and forthcoming Windows 8. I love this website – the design, the colors you choose for design, and of course the articles!! Tom, I don’t know how you are able to do it, but you definitely have my vote.

Thank you for giving us Microsoft fans and enthusiasts a place to keep informed, celebrate, and share the wonderful news of Microsoft and its industry leading portfolio of products and services.

    A loyal reader and fan

+1000 We all know very well that other sites i.e. CNet & ZDnet pretty much ignore Microsoft news so I’m very happy to have found WinRumors because I can’t find the same amount of information at competing sites.

  • Kip Kniskern –

Congrats, Tom, well deserved.  Obvious (to me at least) how hard you’ve worked on Winrumors this past year, good to see your hard work paying off.  Keep up the good work!

    • Tom W

Cheers Kip (and everyone else!) :)

Nice job Tom, you’ve done a great job designing this website and bringing us up to the minute news on all things Windows and Microsoft. This website loads in the nanoseconds timescale, and the mobile version is just the best out there. Keep up the good work

  • Eingoluq

Congrats Tom. A winner in my book!

Edit: strange that The Verge was not nominated

    • Anonymous

I really like WinRumors but it is limited to Microsoft, it’s really disappointing that TheVerge is not nominated.

    • Anonymous

The Verge works poorly on weaker machines. It also looks mighty scrambled by the looks of its homepage. Plus I think it is not a blog, rather a fully fledged tech site.

  • Wemberg Carlo Estil

Win rumors is the best blog to get Microsoft news and it is something I can relate to since i am a big Microsoft fan for a long time we had blog which name does not convey to favoritism of any particular company but were bashing everything Microsoft related. in this website if feel like I belong here, the comment section is filled with people with great ideas and are quite fun to interact with, we even have trolls!!!! The website is very beautiful and the iPad metro experience is awesome I wish we get more feature/ more author&reader interaction . Tom often reply to some comment and it really pleases me. I <3 WinRumors .
    Sincerely a proud reader

    Congrats Winrumors and Tom!!!

  • rojo

Unlike wmpoweruser, and this blog stands out because content really is at the forefront. I don’t have to fight through advertising to get to the actual article.

This site deserves to win! Oh, and I also voted.

  • Guest

    Well deserved. Good job. Tom!

  • Olisaebuka Maduka

You have my vote Tom, congrats, this blog’s a winner to me.

  • Morgan Wisbey

Congrats Tom! Well deserved. You are my first read in the morning and have replaced the snarky anti-MSFT blogs like Gizmodo and others. Thank you for keeping us in the loop on all things MSFT.

  • wetworker

Congrats. One of the best looking blogs out there, The mobile version is also pretty sweet with that metro goodness.

    • Anonymous

I didn’t know there was amobile app.  I just downloaded it.  Thanks for the tip.

  • Candid Calum

I’ve voted. The amount of articles posted weekly here is brilliant and always satisfies my hunger for the latest news covering everything to do with Microsoft. I’ve noticed that many articles appear to cover news before other blogs/news websites get hold of that info, and some news is only covered on WinRumors (and perhaps the source sometimes), so I’d miss that useful information otherwise.

Please keep up the great work, Tom! I don’t know whether you still have another job or not as well, but if you do, that makes this feat even more astounding.

Thank you for helping me keep up-to-date with all of the latest Microsoft news. Hopefully the readership will continue to grow at a fast pace.

  • StriderNo9

Congrats on the Nom, I discovered this blog maybe 4 months ago and I’ve been a regular ever since.

    WinRumors was my idea

This site and SuperSite for Windows are the two blogs I visit daily for my Microsoft news. I prefer this site to Paul’s for three reasons. This site is visitor friendly. Unlike Tom, Paul actively discourages his visitors’ from offering their opinions. Most of his articles don’t have a comment section. Tom also updates his site more often than Paul. Finally, Paul’s melancholy, cynical personality irritates me sometimes. Congrats on the nomination, Tom. Well done!

Hi Tom, Thanks for a great job. Your site is clean, focussed, simple and easy to read what a pleasure.

Your writing style too is the same without the snarkiness and glass half empty approach of most other tech bloggers whose aim seems to be to slag everyone off except Apple and Steve Jobs.

Note to other tech bloggers you could all learn something from Tom here.

Love your site its the first one I visit on my phone in the morning and usually the last one I look at night.

    Thank you.

awesome!! I never miss a thing here. congrats tom :)

  • Tim Mariner

Well-deserved nomination, Tom!  I hope the site wins the award.  It’s one of the most-visited sites in my browser…and for good reason!

    Good luck…. :)

    Well deserved, Tom.
You don’t always break the news first, but you break the news *properly* and your site is well presented and easy on the eyes. For the most part, I think your followers are the best behaved and intelligent of the Windows Phone news sites too.

    Keep up the good work!

  • Mina

I just voted. WinRumors is the best. Thanks Tom now I dont have to follow iClones like Paul Thurrott or Marry Jo.

  • Tony Gorham

    Great Job! I love Winrumors!

  • Dude

This site is better than the crap that is Neowin.

  • Anonymous

Winrumours is so polished that it gives off the vibe that it’s been running for years. I was genuinely surprised when I read that it was new. I thought I’d just discovered it late.

  • Wizard

Congratulations Tom. What stands apart from other Windows related blogs/sites is, how clean this site is? Your site (or should I say our site :)) is very clean without any extra graphics or gimmicks, it presents to the reader what the reader wants, nothing more, nothing less. The way it is presented is commendable, I would also say that part of that design idea has to be credited to MS for inventing Metro style :). As with most of the readers, I am also an ardent fan of Winrumors, I visit the site, several times a day, even when I am on the train I check this site on my mobile. Great work!! Keep going and we will follow your feeds.
Cheers!! btw, hey Tom, you owe a party to all of us here.

  • Impartial

    Ole winrumours! Ole Tom!

Well done WinRumors, shame The Verge, Neowin and WinBeta haven’t been nominated, wish they had been.

The new design looks and runs great, well done to all involved and keep up the news posting!

  • Justfortherecord

Congratulations Tom! Wish you another year of success.

I do have a request. Microsoft is such a huge company with so much to offer in way of technology, research and philanthropy. If you could do more to cover those areas as well. It would give everyone a bigger picture that Microsoft is not just a WIndows company or an XBOX company.

  • Kitab

Thankyou too, Tom. You got my vote for all the effort you put on your winrumours site. “Poi-Poi”!
